🦋 The Party

You wake up at a party.

You're not sure how, exactly, you got here. You may have just been walking in the woods or at a meeting for work or doing any other normal activity for you. But you know you weren't supposed to be at this party, you're fairly certain.

Anyone you ask about it will say the party is for you. You and the others also waking up and looking confused. Further questions will lead to the partygoers insisting you have something to eat. You're starving and others are eating the food without repercussion, so you figure there's no harm in a bite. You finish your portion.

It seems to be a holiday party of some sort, if the large, candle-decorated pine tree in the middle of the tables is any indication. While the party appears to be outside, the temperature is mild and pleasant within the gates and hedges sectioning the party off from the rest of the garden. Stars twinkle overhead, a full moon hanging in the sky, as fluffy flakes of oddly not-cold snow drift to the ground. Some of the hosts dance in a circle around the pine tree, moving their hands around in odd patterns as their feet move; it seems to make the tree glow. The mood seems to be festive, with everyone smiling brightly. Their chipper voices sometimes crescendo louder than the soft chamber music that's being performed in the corner; their laughter rings out like little bells now and then as people get settled.

There are candles and sprigs of pine on every table accenting the festive spread of food and drinks. There are cookies, olives and cheese and crackers, various sliced meats, cranberries and oranges, chocolate coins, fried potatoes of every shape and style, warmed cider and mulled wine, and every other type of food you might be craving.

As the party winds down and everyone's eaten, a tall, stately woman stands up and speaks. You feel her voice more than hear it.

I am the Lawspeaker of the Fae, elected by Seelie and Unseelie alike, and you are all, now, subjects of Faerie. You cannot leave this realm once you have eaten our food, and even if you could, there is no saying how much time has passed back where you're from. Your loved ones are likely dead, your problems have likely played out. We require assistance in various matters, and each of you has been chosen for your talent and skill. You will be adopted by one of the Seelie or Unseelie Courts based on your strengths and personality. Your Court will decide what to do with you from there.

As suddenly as she stood, she sits back down.

🦋 A Great Miracle Happened There

In front of you sits a spinning top with symbols you don't recognize on each of its four sides. Next to it is a pile of chocolate coins. Someone nearby helpfully explains that you'll need a second player to bet against, but they at least are willing to take a second to explain the rules.

Each round, each player puts a coin into the pot. Then they take turns spinning the top, taking an action depending on the symbol that is landed on. The wind chime means you do nothing. The coin means you take everything in the pot. The sword means you take half of everything in the pot (half plus one if there is an odd number). The hand means you put a piece of your winnings back in the pot. When one person owns every chocolate coin and the other person is left with nothing, they have won the game.

Perhaps you should try and flag someone down to play a game to figure out what's going on around here. After all, half of the party guests look about as confused as you do, and it might be a nice idea to start getting to know the other people here.

🦋 Eat Me

Tucked away in a corner sits the dessert table. Each cake, cookie, and pastry has signs next to them:

Warning: Do Not Eat

But everything else you've had tonight doesn't seem to have an effect, so what's the harm in a little sweet treat? You dig in, and then, without your knowledge, something changes about you. What those changes are, exactly, is dependent on the desserts you've eaten. Luckily the effect is only temporary; some only last a matter of minutes, some last hours, but either way as soon as you leave the party, you'll be cured.

Types of Desserts

  • Cakes: You will believe you've lived in the Fae Realm your whole life and belong there
  • Cookies: You will shrink down to about two inches tall
  • Pies: You will forget someone important to you
  • Candies: You will no longer be able to tell any lies
  • Custards: You will grow a tail, antennae, wings, or any combination thereof

🦋 GEIS

You feel a vibration in your pocket sometime after the Lawspeaker addresses everyone. When you search for the source, you will pull out your Leaf, the device the Fae use to stay in touch with each other. Anyone who's used a smart phone will easily recognize how it works.

Greetings, Adopted. This is your Lawspeaker.

Tell us all of a time you received a gift. It could be one you enjoyed or one you did not. Perhaps a particularly amusing story will be rewarded.

V had been passing by as the stranger spoke up. He had been on the way to get another drink (because that's the only way to actually cope with the impossible, right?) when this stranger addressed him. He slowed and glanced toward the voice to confirm that the greeting was actually directed toward him.

Iridescent eyes met purely synthetic ones, printed specifications rather than even an attempt at any natural color, metal embedded into his face, and his arms. The uncanny appearance of the stranger didn't really put V off, but there was an organic element to it all that made it hard for him to wrap his mind around. Anything could be attained with enough money to throw around, though, so he decided not to linger on it for too long.

"Can't say I ever been graceful in anything I did. Guess I was left alone too much as a kid to learn manners." He took the seat and let himself relax a little, a hint of a smile crossing his lips. V's voice contrasted to the stranger's: rough and unrefined, feeling a little loud even when V was calm.

"Imagine you're gonna win unless you tell me how to play. Granted, it's only a matter a time before I figure out how to cheat," he said as his smile grew and his expression shifted, growing more mischievous.

hello my child ;)

Those eyes were very striking. Viktor searched them briefly, curious, but he didn't pry. They were both augmented in different ways, which meant this person might actually be able to answer the litany of questions he had about himself — to say nothing of the stories they might share. Straightening, Viktor leaned forward just a touch, barely managing to contain the intensity of his interest. "You are in luck," Viktor returned lightly, a tiny, lopsided smile tugging at his lips. "I never had any patience for manners."

He turned his attention back to the table, tilting his head as though considering something. "Hm." Viktor reached forward to twist the top, his hand trembling just slightly, an involuntary movement. "You know, that does not incentivize me to teach you." It was a teasing comment, but he spoke the words so evenly, he couldn't be sure whether the joke would land. That was Viktor for you: driest humor on the planet.

After a few wobbly turns, the top clattered to reveal the sword symbol. Viktor flicked his gaze up, eyebrows raised as if in challenge. Would this stranger pick up the rules of the game? It was an entertaining thought experiment, if nothing else. He passively took his winnings before gesturing to the toy. "It's your turn," he said in that same ridiculously calm voice. The little shit.

V made no indication that he'd noticed the stranger's interest, though he certainly recognized the curiosity in the stranger's eyes. There was something there, an interest that he didn't have enough information to piece together quite yet. That certainly piqued his own interest, but it seemed as though there'd be plenty of time to get to know each other.

When the stranger admitted he had no incentive to teach him, V chuckled and the stranger coaxed a smile out of him that was larger than most people could even imagine him wearing. He watched the stranger take his turn and when he saw those eyebrows raise, V couldn't help but chuckle again. "So it's like that, then." He picked up the top and looked over each of the symbols, clearly considering their meaning. When he was satisfied, he spun the top with his left hand and watched the top as it spun and did its little dance. "Probably a smarter choice on your part."

It eventually toppled over to reveal the coin. V didn't immediately move as he looked at it while considering its meaning. He was waiting for Johnny to walk up any second now and offer his input, but it never came. He didn't need the dead rockerboy's input, but he'd grown so accustomed to it that its absence was louder than his incessant whining ever was. If there was one thing that V knew, it was that if he was wrong in a way that was advantageous to this stranger, then the stranger wouldn't tell him. If he was correct in a way that benefited himself, the stranger would lie and tell him to take less. If he was wrong in a way that benefited himself, the stranger would protest heavily. He didn't need Johnny to tell him all of that. Well... He may as well see which reaction he'll get and go big.

It was V's turn to glance up at the stranger. He watched the man's expression as he started to take all of the remaining coins from the pot. He carefully watched the expression of the stranger as he collected the coins wordlessly, clearly waiting for the interjection that he was incorrect and needed to stop.

Pleased when his teasing seemed to yield a positive response, Viktor gave a little shrug, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "In theory," he said, fully able to admit he didn't exactly know whether this would pan out in his favor or not. That was being a scientist for you. Or, well, former scientist. "I am right as often as I am wrong," Viktor added, a little cheeky, twirling his staff a bit which stood tall at his side. He'd always had a restless energy, one that his chronic pain prevented from being expressed in ways that weren't incessant fiddling. And now with the game pieces being carefully studied, he needed something to do with his hands.

And then his companion proceeded to take all the coins, and Viktor's eyebrows rose. Part of him had expected the game to take a very different course — perhaps one where they made up entirely new rules. But it seemed as though this person was, in fact, determined to win the right way, and he couldn't fault that kind of tenacity. He understood it on an intimate level, in fact, and his expression reflected that, a look of approval superseding the surprise.

"Impressive." It was his turn to spin the top, and this time, it landed on the sword. Without anything left in the pot, he would have to cede this round, though it did little to explain the symbol. Another interesting development. Viktor flicked his gaze back up to eye his companion before pushing the little top back toward him across the table. "Your turn," he said, wondering how quickly they would be able to pick all this up. Quietly, Viktor surmised it would take at most three turns. They seemed extremely perceptive, and determined, too. This would be an entertaining experiment.

guess the dice want v to speed run these symbols lol

The other's expression was enough to confirm that the choice he made was the correct one, and that he may not have a particularly good poker face. A faint look of surprise crossed his face as he then received the verbal confirmation and praise. Honesty in this context isn't what he expected, and he found himself momentarily caught between appreciation and mistrust for it. He spun the top and his gaze lowered to watch it spin.

"More impressive is your honesty. Spent my entire life havin' to figure shit out, know less honest people than I got fingers." The top wobbled and landed unceremoniously on the hand symbol. This left V quiet as he turned thought over what the symbol could mean, especially with relation to the wind chimes. Black lacquered nails gently drummed idly on the table as he considered his options. "Most people that know me woulda said I could only take one. People that don't know me woulda tried to say I gotta give them coins."

V had tentatively decided to put aside his mistrust and hope that his new friend would correct him if he was wrong as he picked up one of his coins and put it back into the pot. Much as he went to the extreme with the coin and took all of the coins from the pot, he went to the other extreme and only put one coin back. Assuming the other didn't stop him, he picked up the top and offered it back to him.
