Test Drive Meme #3

TDM #3 - May/June 2025
🦋 Introduction

Welcome to the Pixie Led Test Drive Meme!

The prompts will always be game canon, provided both characters who participate in a thread are either already in the game, or get accepted in the next application round.

You do not need an invitation to join the Test Drive Meme, it's open for anyone!

Please indicate character name and canon in the subject line of your top-level. For current characters, you may also indicate your character's court.

For prospective players, Invites open on the 18th, Reserves on the 20th, and Applications on the 22nd. Thanks for checking us out and we hope you'll join us!

🦋 The Party

You wake up at a party.

You're not sure how, exactly, you got here. You may have just been walking in the woods or at a meeting for work or doing any other normal activity for you. But you know you weren't supposed to be at this party, you're fairly certain.

Anyone you ask about it will say the party is for you. You and the others also waking up and looking confused. Further questions will lead to the partygoers insisting you have something to eat. You're starving and others are eating the food without repercussion, so you figure there's no harm in a bite. You finish your portion.

It's another garden party near a large hedge maze in the middle of the night. With his penchant for games the Ruler of the Spring Court decided it would be nice to hold an actual game for all the Adopted present. None of that dreidel game a couple of parties ago. This time, he wants more spectacle with higher stakes. Forced to participate and host aspects of this gathering as well, the Ruler of the Dark Court wanted nothing to do with this, so he figured his participation in itself is for the party to happen at night, during his rule, when his mood is at its most pleasant.

Of course, there is no shortage of light sources such as candles and torches, much to the Earl's chagrin, as well as no shortage of food. This time, the fae decided to try their hand on some pasta. They heard it's a good delicacy from the mortal plane. Thing is, sauces look and smell bizarre. One's purple, while another's bright pink, and they taste fruity, as well as flowery, much like the cookies from the last gathering.

As the party winds down and everyone's eaten, a tall, stately woman stands up and speaks. You feel her voice more than hear it.

I am the Lawspeaker of the Fae, elected by Seelie and Unseelie alike, and you are all, now, subjects of Faerie. You cannot leave this realm once you have eaten our food, and even if you could, there is no saying how much time has passed back where you're from. Your loved ones are likely dead, your problems have likely played out. We require assistance in various matters, and each of you has been chosen for your talent and skill. You will be adopted by one of the Seelie or Unseelie Courts based on your strengths and personality. Your Court will decide what to do with you from there.

As suddenly as she stood, she sits back down.

🦋 Feeling on Hedge

So, what about this hedge maze that seems to have appeared out of nowhere and looming quite eerily beside this night's gathering? For one, peculiar noises can be heard whenever one's near its entrance. From the rustling of leaves to a woman crying, everything seems to be coming from inside.

Of course, the Adopted's participation is required and paramount. Anyone who refuses will be met with harsh penalties and consequences, whatever those may be. They also hint of a prize to anyone who comes out victorious on the other side. It's unclear what it is, though.

The fae know that while the Adopted have been very useful so far, they are also vulnerable and susceptible to fear, so to mitigate that, they have some colorful shots on a table marked LIQUID COURAGE near the entrance to the maze with such effects:

  • Gold: Essentially a strong drink that gives you profound energy for 24 hours.
  • Red: Downing this will make you feel warm like an aphrodisiac.
  • Blue: Basically functions like a normal tequila shot. Or three. Comes with a little bag of salt.

These shots are not compulsory for the Adopted to take, but they will be highly encouraged to do so before entering. Once inside, the rustling of leaves and the sounds of someone crying become louder and even more evident. There are also a few key things that seem to be very clear the longer an Adopted is within the maze's walls:

  • The maze is moving. How it's doing it, nobody knows. But it appears to be alive somehow, much like the castle grounds, so finding a clear pathway is almost impossible.
  • Whenever an Adopted turns right two consecutive times, they will see a more positive outcome from a terrible event in their lives. Lost someone? They're now here and alive. Gave up on a dream? You find yourself currently living it.
  • If an Adopted turns left two consecutive times, they will see someone, a family member or a friend who's still alive and had a deep impact on their lives, bleeding and dead on the ground.

It would be great if no one else can see an Adopted during their most vulnerable, but since the maze moves constantly, another Adopted or two might be able to see them trying to parse out what they're seeing, even if their fellow Adopted can't see it themselves.

🦋 Can't Unseelie It

CW: dismemberment, body horror, forced body transformations, mild gore, asphyxiation, drowning of children, death

The Spring King only wanted some good-natured fun within the maze, but unbeknownst to him, some Unseelie creatures and Unseelie magic have appeared inside, threatening the safety of the Adopted traversing every nook and cranny. Surely this will not have any lasting consequences between the relationship of the Seelie and Unseelie court rulers. Not at all.

A few of these Unseelie beings and Unseelie magic roaming around the hedge maze that the Adopted will have a chance to meet are as follows:

  • Manananggal: Capable of severing its torso from its legs, this vampiric creature usually preys on sleeping pregnant women and unborn babies. But not anymore. Due to magic put on it, this manananggal will strike anyone it comes across. Better pour salt on its severed lower torso once you find it, or else.
  • La Llorona: Remember that woman crying? Well, somewhere in the maze alongside the eerie sounds of water flowing, you'll come across a weeping woman cloaked in white with her back turned against you. Be careful not to approach her because once you do, she'll try to choke you to death, reminiscent of how she drowned her own children.
  • Jersey Devil: The first thing you'll hear once you turn is a high-pitched, blood-curdling scream then the sound of bat wings flapping. You better run as fast as you can to the other direction because this devil is out to attack anyone it sees on its path.
  • A fountain: How odd. Running from the jersey devil or the manananggal might have made you thirsty so perhaps there's no harm in drinking from it. But just coming in contact with its water will make any Adopted soon realize they have transformed into an Unseelie creature.

Fighting off these creatures might be best with a fellow Adopted. After all, there's power in numbers. Just be careful not to die within the hedge maze. There might be some dire consequences.

🦋 GEIS

You feel a vibration in your pocket sometime after the Lawspeaker addresses everyone. When you search for the source, you will pull out your Leaf, the device the Fae use to stay in touch with each other. Anyone who's used a smart phone will easily recognize how it works.

Greetings, Adopted. This is your Lawspeaker.

To be on theme with our festivities for tonight, we want to know a time in your life when you felt lost and wandering about. Perhaps the most compelling story will receive a reward from us.

Dodger looks at the leaf. "... Sorry, Nance, you've lost me."
artfuldawkins: (maybe not so respectable)

[personal profile] artfuldawkins 2025-05-23 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Dodger pauses, cigarette near his mouth, glancing over at Spike. Oh, he's worked it out, ain't he?

"Interestin' read."

"She's a duck, but she's still a person. A bit rude, but I suppose that must be all ducks- you've seen 'em back home." Ducks were very rude.

[Maelle frowns.]

Do you live a very bland life?

"I'm a lot more observant and perceptive than most people think. Been a right monster too for most of my undead existence. It's not hard if you know the things to look for." Spike explained easily.
artfuldawkins: From hollow-art unless stated (jack dawkins charismatic)

"I was meanin' the leaf thing," he says, but shrugs a little.

A nod.

"Maybe we'll talk."

Big maybe.

The leather coat is perfectly fine, the only casualty is some tears in his shirt thankfully. Minor, too. "If we can find the exit, yes." Spike agreed, pulling her in briefly for a one-armed hug. Seemed like she could use it.

He'll keep that arm around her as they walk too, trying to find a way out.
sod_off: (Spike 38)

[personal profile] sod_off 2025-05-23 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Spike shrugged in response, as it made no difference to him. "Any other major questions, long as I'm adding to your tab?" He asked instead. Really he was going to be 'nice', and just add this in to the other owing him a drink. But Spike wasn't going to let him know that.
artfuldawkins: (look up to the sky)

[personal profile] artfuldawkins 2025-05-23 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
A head shaking, finishing off the cigarette. "I'll learn as I go, always been good at that." He nods at Spike. "Thanks though, mate, done me a solid."

"Oh! Some people said it's like a celly-phone. I don't know what that is. But this fellow here- and it is a little fellow, he'll sprout legs, but he's quite gentle and kind." Nancy strokes the top of her Leaf, and it seems pleased with her.

"You can use it to talk to people."

Do I? [ His grin is a little lopsided, just a little haunted, but soft, even after everything. Tipping his head to the side, Gustave shrugged a shoulder and chuckled. ] I'll let you in on a secret, [ and he's stage whispering, biting back a laugh, ] Shots aren't for me either. I'm really a glass or two of wine and then a day or two of regret kind of guy.

[ Taking the glass with a smile, he picks one up in return and offers it to her, clinking them together as he gives his name. ] Gustave.

"Still not quite gettin' it, but I suspect I’ll learn."

Well, that too. [And it's certainly useful information, given that there are definitely dangers lurking in this maze.]

But I meant the shape of your Persona. What happened to - Prometheus, was it?

I don't know, I don't eat.

[ It's all equally disgusting to it. ]

There's some kind of pastries over there. The humans seem to like those better.

[ Complete with a jab in that direction with a thumb, not looking over there with its eyes to do so. It's not looking directly at Gabriel with the eyes in its head, either, although its gaze is sort of just off to the side of him. ]

On Hedge

"Liquid courage," huh? [ Eddie says as he stares at the table of shot glasses. He grabs a blue one with a shrugged shoulder and shoots it back. Bleh, tequila; he's had enough tequila to last him an entire lifetime at this point... He chases the shot with some of that bag of salt it came with. It cuts the taste but... Man he would have done quite a bit to not think about anything having to do with Mexico right about now.

He tries (and fails) to not notice the silence in his head, that for the past while would have been filled with a booming "Eddie!" and some stupid question about human social mores. Or biology. Or why Eddie was feeling the way he was feeling. Or whatever, it didn't fucking matter. Point was he was alone at this weird fucking party with weird fucking alien-looking guys. (Well maybe not alien; no one was especially gooey.) He tosses back another blue shot.

Eddie half turn to look at whoever's behind him. ]
Sorry. [ He slurs, before he shoots back a third drink, declaring: ] I'm done.

[ A beat. ] Hey, guy. It might be a good idea to- Ehhh. Stick together, maybe? [ Eddie says as he gestures to the entrance to the maze. ]

[Gabriel hadn't missed the previous comment about 'human food', but he'd failed to give that the appropriate amount of weight, considering what he'd thought he was talking to. Hey, 'human food' was a very normal kind of phrasing, for him.

'I don't eat' was also not a strange concept. Except when it came out of something that looked very decidedly human. It actually does prompt the angel to glance at Murderbot for a moment, regarding it with an almost quizzical, curious air.
]

I thought mortals loved eating. That's has to be half of what they talk about at any given time.

[He did choose his words carefully, 'they' instead of 'you'. Through that singular comment alone he could already easily surmise he wasn't speaking with a human.

... He is gonna pick up a pastry tho, because he's still not going to think critically about his own impulses yeehaw

[The laughter is, of course, extremely confusing to Gabriel, who cocks his head at the sound like a perplexed parrot. If nothing else, he politely waits until Faquarl is finished before he asks:]

What? What's so funny, I didn't make a joke.

[Yeah, those condolences were serious, he meant that! Anyone who wasn't an angel, Gabriel was quickly surmising, was just weird. Everyone here is a freak except him, obviously. In contrast to Faquarl, Gabriel remains tense, his posture not dissimilar from a marching soldier. No relaxation here, no sir.]

... Surely though, the reward would match the difficulty of the task. How hard could it possibly be to... what did you say? 'Cuddle bumblebees?' ...

[That actually sounded really hard now that he thought about it, bees were pretty tiny. He's overthinking this a lot.]

Babysitting isn't difficult, they're children. They can't do anything.

[He does know what savory means, in theory, though in practice it's a mystery. Gabriel actually looks thoughtful as he chews for a moment, intrigued by the flavor. Strange, one wouldn't think plain noodles would be all that interesting but-]

... So it isn't supposed to be... [He gestures a little, clearly at a loss for descriptors. What fits this right, what's the definition of-]

Tangy?

[... It's lemons. It's yellow because it's lemons, and he's going for another bite because lemons is good actually. When you have no basis for comparison you end up making some really weird texture to flavor associations. Lemons is good]

Have you tried the yellow ones? Perhaps you will change your mind if you do, it isn't that bad, actually.

[For a moment, Nancy just stares. The man in front of her- no. No, he's not him. He can't be. For starters, he doesn't recognize her (is he from before he met her? from before she grew up?) and his accent, when he slurs at her, is incredibly American.

For thirds, he apologizes. Just to make sure she knows it ain't him.

Nancy swallows, and follows his lead, taking her own shot, and going for a second. She doesn't even bother with the salt, just enjoys the burn and makes a face when it hits her stomach.

She looks at the man.]
Sure, if you'd like. [Her accent, opposed to him, is as London as you can get.] What was that drink, anyway? Never had it before.

[ And she felt the same, at once as sharp as a blade and as fragile as glass, her hand resting over his arm as she walked with him. A frown pulled the corners of her mouth down, brown knitting together in concern. Regardless of her feelings on dragons, they were her children's birthright. ]

And what have you learned? [ Admittedly, she knew very little, only what Rhaenyra shared and that wasn't much. ] I've noticed. It is worth taking advantage of.

"That is a sentiment very few where I am from would share." For all of her intensive education, protecting herself had never been consider a worthy subject, and Alicent had never thought she would need it — knighthood was for second sons like her brother, not for daughters like her. "As you wish," Alicent replied, just a little guarded but she offered a warm smile. "I'm not one to turn away a friend when I have so few I can claim." The Red Keep was a parade of friendly masks over ulterior motives, and Alicent expected the same was true here, but she had no reason to distrust Hazel, who had seemed genuine with her.

With a steadying breath, Alicent nodded, allowing Hazel to approach to offer her instruction on how to better wield the dagger she was gifted. It still felt strange in her hand, but she supposed she could get used to it, especially if she took the time to practise. "I agree. We don't know our enemy, but we share the same one, and that makes us perfect allies." Alicent felt uneasy about the fae, their request and all of the mystery surrounding their presence here, but their present problem — this labyrinth — took precedence. Following closely behind, Alicent held the dagger in shaking hands, hoping they might find their way out without further incident. "Do you know anything about the fae," she asked, partially to break the tense silence and to gather more information about their captors.

[If he knew he was being called crazy, he'd take exception to that, excuse you. As it stands, Gabriel lets out a frustrated grunt as the spear misses its more fatal mark.

Can he do that again? Oh boy can he, and he doesn't hesitate for a second either. The very instant the creature is frozen, Gabriel moves without questioning it. 'Can't hold it long' is going to be taken with the utmost gravity here.

Re-calibrating his aim takes a split second, and this time the spear flies true. The luminous weapon slams clean through the beast, pinning it to the ground like a gruesome entomology display. Gabriel takes one breath, and then another, quickly compartmentalizing that unseemly explosion of emotion as he tries to switch tracks. Rage wasn't terribly reassuring for anyone, after all.
]

... What are your wounds?

[He'll start there, focusing now on Till.]

She was tugged slightly closer with her words; his own way of acknowledging it.

"Like I said, manang something or other. Too many G's in its name. Only read about 'em, but that whole two pieces thing is pretty distinctive. Where I'm from you find 'em in Asia I think. Maybe not the continent proper, but around there if I remember right. Not sure what the first thing was other than kind of hilarious now that I'm not fighting it." It really had looked ridiculous.
