🦋 The Party

You wake up at a party.

You're not sure how, exactly, you got here. You may have just been walking in the woods or at a meeting for work or doing any other normal activity for you. But you know you weren't supposed to be at this party, you're fairly certain.

Anyone you ask about it will say the party is for you. You and the others also waking up and looking confused. Further questions will lead to the partygoers insisting you have something to eat. You're starving and others are eating the food without repercussion, so you figure there's no harm in a bite. You finish your portion.

It's a garden party at the crack of dawn, with the sun still in its early stages of climbing through the yonder, casting a good mix of pastel hues of blue, pink, and beige on everything. Heralding the first day of spring, the Ruler of the Spring Court has found it fitting to arrange this gathering where guests can feel the blades of grass touching their ankles, as well as the rich soil beneath their feet. Flowers of all kinds surround the party as if they were carefully curated. With spring as the "dawn of seasons," which marks a transition from winter's latency to the resurgence of life everywhere, the Ruler of the Dawn Court has also seen it fit to host aspects of this party during the one time of the year that dawn occurs the whole day. Tall candles and torches grace the outskirts of the garden party, providing warmth and an orange glow everywhere. Not one flame goes out even with the occasional wind, the Duchess always makes sure of this.

There are also freshly picked blossoms and branches with leaves on every table accenting the festive spread of food and drinks. This time, a lot of the food prepared for the Adopted guests are familiar to them with a little bit of a twist. Burgers might come in small packages and in toothpicks, while hotdogs in buns are also diminutive. Cookies look delectable but they have a flowery flavor to them, as if eating freshly picked daisies or daffodils. Fruits that may have been present in an Adopted's home, such as pineapples and watermelons, have seeds in odd places. Picking this selection of food is an attempt to be more welcoming and to appease the lovely guests the fae have invited.

As the party winds down and everyone's eaten, a tall, stately woman stands up and speaks. You feel her voice more than hear it.

I am the Lawspeaker of the Fae, elected by Seelie and Unseelie alike, and you are all, now, subjects of Faerie. You cannot leave this realm once you have eaten our food, and even if you could, there is no saying how much time has passed back where you're from. Your loved ones are likely dead, your problems have likely played out. We require assistance in various matters, and each of you has been chosen for your talent and skill. You will be adopted by one of the Seelie or Unseelie Courts based on your strengths and personality. Your Court will decide what to do with you from there.

As suddenly as she stood, she sits back down.

🦋 Chance at a Dance

A party is not complete without dancing, of course, and while during the last gathering held for the Adopted, different fae danced to music exclusively for them around a glowing tree, this time they are insisting their guests to join in.

This is a party for you, after all.

If the prodding of the different fae hosts won't convince you, perhaps the music will. They play easily recognizable tunes that their wonderful guests must have heard before. These melodies have certain unique effects to their mortal attendees, which are as follows:

  • Upbeat Music: You will believe that you and your dance partner have been friends forever and have known each other a long time.
  • Romantic Music: You will become amorous and flirtatious towards your dance partner.
  • Slow Music: You will develop some tension with your dance partner. It may be negative or sexual; completely up to you.
  • Quiet Music: You will assume your dance partner is a threat and try to fight them.

🦋 Flower Power

At the Spring King's behest, every Adopted should wear a flower corsage or boutonnière to the gathering. After all, this is to celebrate the coming of spring and what better way to do that than to honor everything in bloom.

The thing is, though, the King of Spring, while amorous and friendly, also has a penchant for playing with mortals' memories, if not also affect their desires and despairs.

So, mischievous as he is, he made sure to enchant the different flowers present in every corsage and boutonnière for the party with the effects below:

  • Rose: You will recall a horrific trauma
  • Carnation: You will see a vision of your future, whether it's good or bad
  • Orchid: You will remember a time you lost someone
  • Chrysanthemum: You will believe someone among the Adopted is your soulmate
  • Dahlia: You will believe you betrayed someone important to you, whether you actually did or not

It is perhaps a good thing that no one but the Adopted are allowed to see these visions and memories, but everyone who wears a corsage or boutonnière will be able to see each other's memories and visions when in close enough physical proximity to the vision-haver, for better or for worse.

🦋 GEIS

You feel a vibration in your pocket sometime after the Lawspeaker addresses everyone. When you search for the source, you will pull out your Leaf, the device the Fae use to stay in touch with each other. Anyone who's used a smart phone will easily recognize how it works.

Greetings, Adopted. This is your Lawspeaker.

Tell us all of a time you gave someone a gift. Perhaps a bouquet of flowers or a box of chocolates. Was it appreciated or not? A reward might await the most meaningful gift given.

[Eilonwy wasn't one of the royals Auradon had focused on, so her story was hazy at best for him, but he did remember something about a cauldron and a pig? Maybe it was a scruffy dog? Harry didn't think mentioning any of it would be helpful, so he didn't. What he did do was stay close and keep talking. If nothing else he could protect a little girl. And in a way, she was someone from home. It was nice knowing he wasn't alone, even if she had no idea who he was.]

Aye, I know whirlpools. Seem a few in my time, though the ship's never come close tae being drawn in. Yer right aboot how dangerous they are. Who are ye friends?
waterfawn: (you never asked!; confident;)

[personal profile] waterfawn 2025-04-13 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[He's right, Eilonwy didn't know who he was. He didn't look familiar but Harry was friendly and that was enough for her. She lit up a little at the question.] Taran- he's a pig farmer but he's also very brave, then there's his pet pig, Hen Wen, and a bard, Fflewddur, who plays the harp. There's also Gurgi- a wood troll.

[Eilonwy realized she was rambling.] Ah, Gurgi is a troll, but he's much smaller than what you might be thinking of. Only about- [She held out one of her hands to a little lower than knee height.] This tall, roughly.

[There it was. He'd been right. It was surreal to meet someone who was an adult with a family back home as a kid. She really had no clue. Harry sank down onto the grass and patted the patch next to him.]

Here, sit. Want tae tell me aboot yer adventures? Sounds like it'd be an excitin story.
waterfawn: (you never asked!; confident;)

[personal profile] waterfawn 2025-04-13 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[Eilonwy took a seat and gave a quick smile. Not at all. She'd been on the way to her next adventure or to see where Taran lived, she hadn't been sure which when she woke up at the party.]

It was, and it started with myself and Bauble being kidnapped.

[personal profile] umas_second 2025-04-13 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[Harry leaned back on his hands, a slight smile on his face as he watched her. He'd never had a chance to spend much time with someone so innocent. But Eilonwy's age, any kid on the Isle was hard and knew the score. Was she typical of an Auradon-raised kid, so trusting and happy? Is that what he would have been like if he'd been born there and not on the Isle?]

Who's Bauble? Who took ye?
waterfawn: (following the bauble)

[personal profile] waterfawn 2025-04-13 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[Eilonwy was just open mostly by default. That's how she made and kept friends, and it hadn't failed her so far. Especially during everything she and her friends had been through. If it was a product of where she'd been born, Eilonwy's too busy making another new friend to really give it a lot of thought.]

A friend- it's about this large. [She held up her hands and made a circle that was roughly the size of a baseball] It can float and likes chasing rats, and we can talk to each other just by thinking. [But as she switched from explaining Bauble to thinking of the Horned King, Eilonwy frowned.] A horrible king who thought I knew where some cauldron was!

His- well, I don't know who they were in his army of things. But one of his lackeys kidnapped both of us and threw us into a dungeon when I told him I had no idea what cauldron he was wanting; and suggested that he actually check a kitchen for one.

[personal profile] umas_second 2025-04-13 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It's no' a fairy?

[Until you got really close, fairies back home looked like a ball of light. They didn't talk exactly, it sounded more like bells ringing, but they did communicate. He'd been told stories about a particular fairy when he was little, and how she betrayed Peter Pan out of jealousy.

Harry chuckled at her indignation. She did seem to have some spirit.]

Tha's th'way tae treat the brute! Good for ye! Then wha happened?
waterfawn: (need some encouragement?;)

[personal profile] waterfawn 2025-04-14 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
As far as I know, no? The ones I met didn't seem to recognize Bauble at all and I've never seen it with wings.

[The fairies in Prydain just looked like very small humans with wings, quick to get angry and run off in the middle of an adventure, but still helpful in their own ways.]

We escaped as quickly as we could! The guards weren't always around and Bauble knows how to navigate well enough. I'm also good at running, so we traveled through the hallways and ducked into shadows where we needed to. I met Taran as we were climbing out of one of the lower parts; but we surprised each other at first. Or at least I surprised him.

[She laughed a little as she remembered it. Eilonwy hadn't been expecting to run into anyone, but she'd been glad to see another human, so things had started to run their course.]

That's when I learned that he'd been captured along with his pig.

[personal profile] umas_second 2025-04-15 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I see.

[He didn't really. A glowing ball that talked with telepathy? He didn't have any idea what that might be.

Harry continued to listen, watching Eilonwy tell her story with an indulgent smile. She really was a cute kid. And so open! It was nothing like spending time with the miniVKs back home. But he liked it.]

So ye met Taran an Hen Wen was it? The pig? Then wha?
waterfawn: (talking again; no we both helped;)

[personal profile] waterfawn 2025-04-16 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It's hard to explain correctly, but if Bauble was here then I could show you easily enough.

[It was easy to recall the adventure as a whole considering how recent it was, and Eilonwy was proud of everyone for surviving everything that had happened.]

The pig was actually still missing, but Taran mentioned her as we went through the castle! We almost were caught a few times, so we had to move very slowly and I lost track of Taran in a burial room for fallen soldiers. He returned with a sword and..

[Eilonwy trailed off and frowned a little.] And I asked if he'd taken it from one of the bodies, which Taran confirmed. I suppose I can understand it because he didn't have a weapon, but. [She sighed.] But we kept moving and once we were near a large main room, we found a bard chained to the wall yelling for help.

Weel, if it shows up, I'll take ye up on tha.

[Harry studied her, curious why Eilonwy seemed bothered by Taran taking the sword.]

Why's it bother ye tha Taran took the sword? If it was jus wi' a skeleton, no one was usin it.
waterfawn: (careful steps;)

[personal profile] waterfawn 2025-04-18 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
That's true, but my understanding is that it'd been buried with the soldier to honor them. But the burial chamber did look abandoned.

[Eilonwy still hadn't felt right with Taran simply taking the sword, even if she couldn't fully explain why.]
umas_second: (pic#17755203)

[personal profile] umas_second 2025-04-19 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[AKs really were a different breed. If Harry had been in a dungeon with no weapon, he'd have swiped every one they walked past and then some! Actually, he'd have taken the sword no matter what. Harry leaned closer, an understanding smile on his face.]

So the two o'ye were lookin for a way oot an th'pig, aye? Wha then?
waterfawn: (following the bauble)

[personal profile] waterfawn 2025-04-22 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
[Eilonwy wasn't against weapons at all, and if she'd thought to grab one then she might have done so, but while everything was happening her focus was just getting out of the castle. She exhaled and refocused on telling the next part of the adventure.] We made it from that room into another-- not a dungeon, because it wasn't underground. Taran and I had to duck in and out of shadows to avoid guards as we approached it.

There was another person trapped- a bard, older, with a harp hung around his neck. Poor Fflewddur- that's his name, was yelling as loudly as he could. Taran and I worked quickly to free him but more guards were running in. Stone walls are actually very good at bouncing noise.

[Eilonwy idly laces and unlaces her fingers together.] But we're all equally good at running, and we took off as quickly as we could!
