🦋 The Party
You wake up at a party.
You're not sure how, exactly, you got here. You may have just been walking in the woods or at a meeting for work or doing any other normal activity for you. But you know you weren't supposed to be at this party, you're fairly certain.
Anyone you ask about it will say the party is for you. You and the others also waking up and looking confused. Further questions will lead to the partygoers insisting you have something to eat. You're starving and others are eating the food without repercussion, so you figure there's no harm in a bite. You finish your portion.
It's a garden party at the crack of dawn, with the sun still in its early stages of climbing through the yonder, casting a good mix of pastel hues of blue, pink, and beige on everything. Heralding the first day of spring, the Ruler of the Spring Court has found it fitting to arrange this gathering where guests can feel the blades of grass touching their ankles, as well as the rich soil beneath their feet. Flowers of all kinds surround the party as if they were carefully curated. With spring as the "dawn of seasons," which marks a transition from winter's latency to the resurgence of life everywhere, the Ruler of the Dawn Court has also seen it fit to host aspects of this party during the one time of the year that dawn occurs the whole day. Tall candles and torches grace the outskirts of the garden party, providing warmth and an orange glow everywhere. Not one flame goes out even with the occasional wind, the Duchess always makes sure of this.
There are also freshly picked blossoms and branches with leaves on every table accenting the festive spread of food and drinks. This time, a lot of the food prepared for the Adopted guests are familiar to them with a little bit of a twist. Burgers might come in small packages and in toothpicks, while hotdogs in buns are also diminutive. Cookies look delectable but they have a flowery flavor to them, as if eating freshly picked daisies or daffodils. Fruits that may have been present in an Adopted's home, such as pineapples and watermelons, have seeds in odd places. Picking this selection of food is an attempt to be more welcoming and to appease the lovely guests the fae have invited.
As the party winds down and everyone's eaten, a tall, stately woman stands up and speaks. You feel her voice more than hear it.
I am the Lawspeaker of the Fae, elected by Seelie and Unseelie alike, and you are all, now, subjects of Faerie. You cannot leave this realm once you have eaten our food, and even if you could, there is no saying how much time has passed back where you're from. Your loved ones are likely dead, your problems have likely played out. We require assistance in various matters, and each of you has been chosen for your talent and skill. You will be adopted by one of the Seelie or Unseelie Courts based on your strengths and personality. Your Court will decide what to do with you from there.
As suddenly as she stood, she sits back down.
🦋 Chance at a Dance
A party is not complete without dancing, of course, and while during the last gathering held for the Adopted, different fae danced to music exclusively for them around a glowing tree, this time they are insisting their guests to join in.
This is a party for you, after all.
If the prodding of the different fae hosts won't convince you, perhaps the music will. They play easily recognizable tunes that their wonderful guests must have heard before. These melodies have certain unique effects to their mortal attendees, which are as follows:
- Upbeat Music: You will believe that you and your dance partner have been friends forever and have known each other a long time.
- Romantic Music: You will become amorous and flirtatious towards your dance partner.
- Slow Music: You will develop some tension with your dance partner. It may be negative or sexual; completely up to you.
- Quiet Music: You will assume your dance partner is a threat and try to fight them.
🦋 Flower Power
At the Spring King's behest, every Adopted should wear a flower corsage or boutonnière to the gathering. After all, this is to celebrate the coming of spring and what better way to do that than to honor everything in bloom.
The thing is, though, the King of Spring, while amorous and friendly, also has a penchant for playing with mortals' memories, if not also affect their desires and despairs.
So, mischievous as he is, he made sure to enchant the different flowers present in every corsage and boutonnière for the party with the effects below:
- Rose: You will recall a horrific trauma
- Carnation: You will see a vision of your future, whether it's good or bad
- Orchid: You will remember a time you lost someone
- Chrysanthemum: You will believe someone among the Adopted is your soulmate
- Dahlia: You will believe you betrayed someone important to you, whether you actually did or not
It is perhaps a good thing that no one but the Adopted are allowed to see these visions and memories, but everyone who wears a corsage or boutonnière will be able to see each other's memories and visions when in close enough physical proximity to the vision-haver, for better or for worse.
🦋 GEIS
You feel a vibration in your pocket sometime after the Lawspeaker addresses everyone. When you search for the source, you will pull out your Leaf, the device the Fae use to stay in touch with each other. Anyone who's used a smart phone will easily recognize how it works.
Greetings, Adopted. This is your Lawspeaker.
Tell us all of a time you gave someone a gift. Perhaps a bouquet of flowers or a box of chocolates. Was it appreciated or not? A reward might await the most meaningful gift given.
party
[ Pipes up a higher voice, squeaky with rage. Or maybe that's how this guy always sounds, because the speaker is....a bug.
A bug whose proclamation is snapping a similarly rage-filled look off a smaller boy's face, replacing it with startled confusion. ] Wormmon...?
[ The bug is Huffy. ]
Don't listen to them, Ken-chan! It's a trick! Hey, let's go home!
no subject
His expression softens a little. 'Ken-chan' looks a little younger than Mokuba...they're even kidnapping kids? Disgusting. ]
They won't break our wills. I'll keep fighting until they let us go. If they really used that much power to take us, they have to have enough power to reverse it.
[ There's still an undercurrent of anger in Kaiba's voice, but it's softer. ]
no subject
[ But the bug's cut off by his boy placing a hand on his head. Patting it. ]
Thanks. [ Ken looks up at the older boy. That's....definitely an outfit this person decided to wear. Ken will try not to jump to conclusions based on how strongly he is suddenly reminded of the Digimon Kaiser. That's uncharitable. After all, their captors might have placed this person in it, or.....
.....Ken's an uncharitable person. Terrible him. ]
You, too. We'll be all right.
[ But he pauses. Wormmon's correct. So long as they can find a computer monitor - perhaps even otherwise; in extreme circumstances he's been able to open gates without one, though never to the Digital World - Ken's Digivice theoretically, typically, has the power to travel between worlds. But that only helps him. It doesn't help anyone else who was captured. Like this older boy.
Knowing that, can Ken really save only himself and not regret it....?
The boy, already tall for his age, somehow looks even younger AND older when he broods. ]
no subject
Well. ]
My name's Seto. Kaiba. You're Ken and Wormmon, I believe I heard?
[ This is how to do greetings, right? ]
no subject
[ And Wormmon nolastname, one presumes. Worm Worm. Ken brought fucking Worm Worm.
He's also still unsure what to do about their situation. Test whether he can open a gate, certainly. But what will it mean if he can't? What will he do if he can? Does he return to his world, contact the rest of the Chosen Children, and try to return to save everyone else....? Can he ask that of the others? But what if he can't get back? He'll have abandoned everyone. People like Kaiba-san, who clearly have places to get back to. Things they would miss.
--He was about to try to do this alone again, wasn't he. This many people here may mean there are other options. He's not helpless. They're not.
They can't be. ]
Did you have an idea what to do, Kaiba-san?
no subject
[ He pinches the bridge of his nose, looking frustrated. ]
As I see it there are two ways forward. One: to learn more about the leaders and what they want, the better to cut a deal with them. Two: to learn more about the supposed
[ He says the next word with a distinct wrinkling of his nose. ]
Magic of this world, in the hopes of harnessing it to go back. I've heard chatter that some of those who've been here longer have gained powers.
no subject
[ Wormmon stares. People? Like, human-people? Non-Digimon people? How odd....
.................what if he and Ken-chan could fly together...... ]
no subject
[ He hates it, but he's been at the mercy of weird curses too many times lately. ]
We have to know the rules of this world to twist them to our advantage, right?
no subject
But there's no guarantee a power granted by this world could be used to combat it, either. Someone who can kidnap this many people might have thought of that.
Then let's try the things we know how to do. Okay, Ken-chan?
[ A glimmer of a smile, in thanks. Wormmon is always looking out for him, isn't he. ]
....Ah.
no subject
[ They make a fair argument. Kaiba's willing to hear them out. Why wouldn't a large talking bug and his human have powers? That's just how this wild world works! ]
What would your plan be?
no subject
Wormmon and I aren't originally from the same world. I can't guarantee it'll work, but I'm usually capable of opening a gate between worlds. Typically it's from my world to his, but....
[ This is the awkward part. The part where he has to acknowledge he doesn't know whether he'll be able to connect to Kaiba's world, whether they're from the same one, or.... ]
If you...wanted to try to come....
no subject
[ Kaiba sounded surprised. It was a kindness he didn't expect in the slightest. People just freely offering to help others? ]
I assume we'd be going to your world first, Wormmon. What's it like?
[ Is it all talking animals and chaos? He's just gonna assume that. ]
no subject
[ A careful observer of his surroundings, Wormmon is not. He's from the Digital World, yes, but home is where the Ken-chan is. ]
Some parts are hot, and some are cold. There's only Digimon there. It got dark and scary, but we fixed it!
[ ....Ken can't exactly argue with any of that, but he can supplement. As he speaks, Wormmon shows no indication of being affronted, either. Ken-chan is so SMART! He knows so many things about Wormmon's own world that Wormmon doesn't really understand! ]
It's a world where digital data is given form, so human emotion and culture has influenced it. We still don't know much about it....but it's many Digimons' precious home.
no subject
[ Wormmon has a certain charm to him. He can see how Digimon have appeal to people. So Ken's been to this world, huh...]
And some humans go there? Do they team up with Digimon, like you two?
no subject
[ He pats Wormmon's head, thinks. Ken's probably reading too much into this, especially since Wormmon is physically here and Kaiba-san can see him, but...
No, he can't not mention this. Not when he recalls all too clearly what happened when he made a similar connection. It's not that he distrusts Kaiba - he just can't live with himself if he DOESN'T add specifics. ]
Though unlike a fully virtual world, Digimon are alive.
[ Wormmon, who had been enjoying his pats anyway, now leans back into them for a snuggle. Poor Ken-chan, tricked into thinking he had been playing a game. Wormmon's kind, gentle partner had nearly cracked under the realization, and Wormmon is so proud of him for getting back up and helping the Digital World heal. Neither of them can erase what they've done, but they can spend every day trying to do and be better! ]
no subject
[ Kaiba felt a slight pang here. He'd never had a pet, of course, but Wormmon was more than a pet, wasn't he? He was a beloved friend, almost like a brother...
He briefly squeezed the locket hanging from his neck. ]
Is there any way I can help you? I don't know anything about your world and how it works, but I've done some research on dimensional travel.
no subject
[ Is that why they both were summoned? Because they have experience with what Ken has been led to believe is still a niche phenomenon....?
No, two cases aren't sufficient to draw that conclusion. He can't rush into things just because he's....what is this sensation. Touched? He's touched that Kaiba wants to help. That he only just met them, and wishes to assist. When all this happening to him, too.
If Ken had harbored any doubts that he had to assist the others here, they're long gone. ]
no subject
[ And there was so much more than that...but this Digimon world seemed like quite the place. He wondered idly if he could ever be one of the chosen.
That was probably more Mokuba's thing. ]
You two are the most promising I've met so far. We'll fight to get home.
no subject
Either way, Ken nods. ]
Right. So...
[ Where to start. Well, this is extremely unlikely, but best to eliminate it first, since it'd make things very convenient. ]
I don't suppose you've seen, or have, a computer here.
no subject
[ He sounds incredibly annoyed about that fact. ]
The fae don't seem fond of that kind of thing. We could ask a favor, but the price would likely be high. I've done negotiation before, but I usually have more leverage than this.
[ They were brought here...for what, again? He sighed. ]
no subject
[ Ken thinks, a hand to his chin and everything. He frowns. His eyebrows set, as if he has settled on a Great Conviction.
Wormmon looks worried. ]
Ken-chan, you aren't thinking....of doing THAT?
no subject
[ Wormmon was clearly worried. Would Ken have to hurt himself to get them out of here? Kaiba didn't want kids getting hurt on his watch. Not that he was financially responsible, it was just. Bad vibes. ]
no subject
[ And it also hurts him to access it. It's terrifying. It's soul-wrenching. Yet what's that, compared to people being captured? ]
But as an intermediate step, it's worth trying.
If you're sure, Ken-chan...
[ Wormmon pulls himself uppy uppy uppy onto his very top level of legs, and clings to Ken's free hand with his top ones. ] Then I'll hold your hand. I'm here for you.
[ Ken's expression is unspeakably soft. ] Thank you, Wormmon.
no subject
[ Kaiba steps a little closer to them, though still at a polite distance. ]
Darkness and negativity are no strangers to me. I'm used to it. As long as we focus on the goal of getting home, we'll make it.
no subject
[ Would do that for someone he just met....? It wasn't just him, or his world, that had to deal with problems like the darkness....? And despite knowing its terrors, he'd....
Well, now there's no stopping Ken. He nods. ]
Okay.
[ He grips his Digivice tight. Holds it up.
Focuses.
Open! ]
