🦋 The Party

You wake up at a party.

You're not sure how, exactly, you got here. You may have just been walking in the woods or at a meeting for work or doing any other normal activity for you. But you know you weren't supposed to be at this party, you're fairly certain.

Anyone you ask about it will say the party is for you. You and the others also waking up and looking confused. Further questions will lead to the partygoers insisting you have something to eat. You're starving and others are eating the food without repercussion, so you figure there's no harm in a bite. You finish your portion.

It's a garden party at the crack of dawn, with the sun still in its early stages of climbing through the yonder, casting a good mix of pastel hues of blue, pink, and beige on everything. Heralding the first day of spring, the Ruler of the Spring Court has found it fitting to arrange this gathering where guests can feel the blades of grass touching their ankles, as well as the rich soil beneath their feet. Flowers of all kinds surround the party as if they were carefully curated. With spring as the "dawn of seasons," which marks a transition from winter's latency to the resurgence of life everywhere, the Ruler of the Dawn Court has also seen it fit to host aspects of this party during the one time of the year that dawn occurs the whole day. Tall candles and torches grace the outskirts of the garden party, providing warmth and an orange glow everywhere. Not one flame goes out even with the occasional wind, the Duchess always makes sure of this.

There are also freshly picked blossoms and branches with leaves on every table accenting the festive spread of food and drinks. This time, a lot of the food prepared for the Adopted guests are familiar to them with a little bit of a twist. Burgers might come in small packages and in toothpicks, while hotdogs in buns are also diminutive. Cookies look delectable but they have a flowery flavor to them, as if eating freshly picked daisies or daffodils. Fruits that may have been present in an Adopted's home, such as pineapples and watermelons, have seeds in odd places. Picking this selection of food is an attempt to be more welcoming and to appease the lovely guests the fae have invited.

As the party winds down and everyone's eaten, a tall, stately woman stands up and speaks. You feel her voice more than hear it.

I am the Lawspeaker of the Fae, elected by Seelie and Unseelie alike, and you are all, now, subjects of Faerie. You cannot leave this realm once you have eaten our food, and even if you could, there is no saying how much time has passed back where you're from. Your loved ones are likely dead, your problems have likely played out. We require assistance in various matters, and each of you has been chosen for your talent and skill. You will be adopted by one of the Seelie or Unseelie Courts based on your strengths and personality. Your Court will decide what to do with you from there.

As suddenly as she stood, she sits back down.

🦋 Chance at a Dance

A party is not complete without dancing, of course, and while during the last gathering held for the Adopted, different fae danced to music exclusively for them around a glowing tree, this time they are insisting their guests to join in.

This is a party for you, after all.

If the prodding of the different fae hosts won't convince you, perhaps the music will. They play easily recognizable tunes that their wonderful guests must have heard before. These melodies have certain unique effects to their mortal attendees, which are as follows:

  • Upbeat Music: You will believe that you and your dance partner have been friends forever and have known each other a long time.
  • Romantic Music: You will become amorous and flirtatious towards your dance partner.
  • Slow Music: You will develop some tension with your dance partner. It may be negative or sexual; completely up to you.
  • Quiet Music: You will assume your dance partner is a threat and try to fight them.

🦋 Flower Power

At the Spring King's behest, every Adopted should wear a flower corsage or boutonnière to the gathering. After all, this is to celebrate the coming of spring and what better way to do that than to honor everything in bloom.

The thing is, though, the King of Spring, while amorous and friendly, also has a penchant for playing with mortals' memories, if not also affect their desires and despairs.

So, mischievous as he is, he made sure to enchant the different flowers present in every corsage and boutonnière for the party with the effects below:

  • Rose: You will recall a horrific trauma
  • Carnation: You will see a vision of your future, whether it's good or bad
  • Orchid: You will remember a time you lost someone
  • Chrysanthemum: You will believe someone among the Adopted is your soulmate
  • Dahlia: You will believe you betrayed someone important to you, whether you actually did or not

It is perhaps a good thing that no one but the Adopted are allowed to see these visions and memories, but everyone who wears a corsage or boutonnière will be able to see each other's memories and visions when in close enough physical proximity to the vision-haver, for better or for worse.

🦋 GEIS

You feel a vibration in your pocket sometime after the Lawspeaker addresses everyone. When you search for the source, you will pull out your Leaf, the device the Fae use to stay in touch with each other. Anyone who's used a smart phone will easily recognize how it works.

Greetings, Adopted. This is your Lawspeaker.

Tell us all of a time you gave someone a gift. Perhaps a bouquet of flowers or a box of chocolates. Was it appreciated or not? A reward might await the most meaningful gift given.

[ Hank stares blankly for a moment, before the stranger starts tearing their own boutonniere off. It doesn't take him long then to unpin his own one, ripping it apart for good measure, before throwing it down and stomping on it. ]

Great. This is, what, more magic? I'm really starting to hate this crap.

[Pink. "And yellow, that's me," she almost remarks, but there's a slight twinge of pain like she was falling into a habit she's trying to break, so she avoids saying it, just listening instead.]

[Though both her eyebrows arch.]
What, really???? Are you Sean Connery's brother or something? [Scottish. Possibly a James Bond reference too!]

How do you get half kidnapped? They got reverse Stockholm syndrome and let you go???

Well, that's gotta be hard to do. It'll ruin my "I'm dead forever" trick if I ever decided to come clean.

[just then the waitress struts over with jinx's order, the orange juice with a draw. she doesn't grant the woman a "thank you", which she does frown over the silence. but sensing the odd tension, she doesn't stick around long and manifests elsewhere to help another table.

the bluenette stretches over to grab her glass, nursing it through a straw, and simply waits for the next bombshell of questions. will he be upset with her, she wonders? only one way to find out.]

No.

[ Because magic isn't real, Hank. Fucked-up alien software trying to run on human and bot-human hybrid hardware, though? Very real. ]

Alien remn--

[ There's a skip in Murderbot's speech, even though its vocal system is primarily organic. ]

Contamination.

[ Performance Reliability, 77% ]

Shit.

[ It wasn't supposed to think about that. ]

[ Erik's mind builds a visual around them, and--

Oh.

There are many theories on why minds look the way they do. He and Jean have talked extensively about it in their telepathy practice, and he's sure if he ever spoke to Emma about the subject, she'd have her own theories too. Charles thinks it speaks to what a mind finds most comfortable; it's primal, most instinctual grasp of home. And if that's true...

He finds himself having to take a deep breath, briefly overwhelmed by the emotion that threatens to swamp him.
]

Yes. I rather think I have underestimated that. [ His reply is quiet and thoughtful, looking at Erik with new regard. He'd only been thinking of the future in the vaguest terms, and as he now realizes, he'd assumed that he and Erik would have just... continued their relationship as-is. Half antagonistic, half friendship. The most complicated and yet the most treasured connection Charles has ever had.

He gathers himself, smoothing a hand over his sweater. Here, even in this mental landscape, he is still in his wheelchair. He needn't be, but it's habit by now.
]

Going chronologically would be our best bet. Why don't you lead the way?

[ Hank would love to believe that magic isn't real. That all the fae people here are just extremely advanced mutants or something else that would be more plausible given his worldview. But it all just feels like too much to ignore the fact that it might actually be magic.

He frowns, brow furrowing, when the stranger interrupts themself mid-word. ]

Everything okay?

I don't know... I-- The fucker just wanted to take anything away from me. I...

[In so many ways, this could gnaw and claw at Till, make him upset, angry, grief stricken to have lost this time and all that experience with Ivan, for their kisses to have meant nothing to him until now, but... He doesn't want to think about that right now, what he wants is his lover and his kisses. He wants to breathe Ivan in and get lost in him, not this cloying smell of flowers and perfumes.

So instead, he moves to pull away from Ivan, just enough to see his face, reaching up with his hands to cup the man's jaw as he gazes into his eerily beautiful eyes.
]

I think... we go somewhere quiet and kiss for a bit. Hm? I'd like to know better the feel of your mouth against me since I was blind until now.

[He leans forward to give Ivan a small kiss, humming into it.]

No. Yes.

[ Very convincing, Murderbot. Time to grab for literally any other topic, and at least it has the presence of mind to not ask after the apparently-dead Raven. ]

Who was that bald person?

[ Smooth. ]

So he's from after the city fell, but still active? Interesting. Aeor holds many secrets still waiting to be uncovered.

[ As they leave the party, it becomes obvious that there's a much wider town available. It's all very rustic, like something straight out of a fantasy book, but it's oddly charming.

Idly, he wonders if anybody thinks Laura doesn't speak much. To a telepath, she's downright chatty.
]

If they're capable of tricking us with flowers and candy, one could certainly assume they're capable of fighting off a dragon. I think your theory holds a lot of merit.

[ That, or Fae magic is limited to mere tricks, and no offensive capability. It's an interesting question. He'd heard about the dragon before, from Erik, and a couple of others, and it had certainly seemed formidable. More alarming is this Doctor Strange's theory about the Fae using them as weapons against each other. ]

This theory of Strange's-- are Fae fighting Fae? Have we been dropped into the middle of a civil war or political fiasco?

(It had felt so fucking real. Buck stood there breathing harshly, his hands on his knees.)

Jesus, that felt so real.

(He turns and looks at the speakers feet, his brow furrowing, before his eyes continue to raise, soon meeting the eye of what he know assumes is an Aeormatan. )

No, man, I'm not.

(he can feel the adrenaline crash coming, his limbs feeling a bit heavy.)
I... lost my kid... no, not my kid... my best friend's kid in a storm. I'm sorry you had to see that. You can go, I'll be okay.

Yes, I'm familiar with it. Going by that reference-- the castle is absurd, doesn't make much sense, and is full of bizarre creatures?

FGC brightens up. "I have...we met Mr. Caleb and Miss Beau," he says brightly, "they were following us....because of this bad wizard and they wanted to warn us and ask us to help this big group of people who were trying to stop him."

He looks down. "And we did...but going to the moon didn't work out how we hoped."

I was born with my powers. As for whether or not I could take these Fae out--

[ Oh, he certainly could. Easily. He wouldn't even need the offered diversions. But Charles likes to keep details about his telepathy close to his chest; most people find a power like his to be uncomfortable.

Instead of spilling the beans, he just smiles wryly.
]

--I think the more pertinent question is: would that be wise? And the answer is almost certainly no. Even if we were able to take them all out, where would we go? And, yes, we would create a lot of enemies. I'm not sure we'd want to annoy them all that much on our first day here.

[ It is a halfway tempting thought, though. ]

What about you? [ Charles' own curiosity about powers is a powerful driving force. ] Were you born with yours?

[ For the barest moment, Charles can see an image projected strongly in her thoughts-- pulsing red light, strands like cobwebs over some sort of tear, and an enormous shape moving beyond. A sensation of straining, using every scrap of power she has, and ultimate triumph.

He can't even begin to imagine what on earth that was, and he's glad he can't, actually. Good lord.
]

I certainly try to. I'm not always successful.

[ His answer comes with a sad little smile before he launches into lecture mode. ]

In my world, there are a lot of people like us. We call ourselves mutants, and we're born with our abilities as a result of natural genetic evolution. As fantastic as our abilities are, regular humans can be... close-minded, and unaccepting. I run a school for mutant children, where they can be themselves, and flourish. I teach people how to unlock the potential of their abilities, and how to control them -- and also some science and literature, which my students typically find far less interesting.

Charles Xavier. Where I'm from, magic is a fictional concept, so it's quite the shock for me, I have to admit.

[ Even with Harry leaning on the arm of his chair, Charles rests his elbows on the armrests and steeples his fingers, studying the crowd. The variation in their appearances is fascinating, much like mutants, but far more than he's ever seen at once.

He glances at Harry, thoughtful.
]

What kind of magic are you familiar with?

[personal profile] mutantrights 2025-03-24 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
[ Charles just smiles placidly at the insult to his control. Let John think what he wants, it does no real harm.

Goodness, he really has earned John's ire, hasn't he? And he still doesn't even know how John knows him. It seems a touch unfair to be judged on decisions he hasn't personally made, but he supposes it's only natural. He'd likely do the same, were he to confront the younger version of someone he disliked.

The question, however, has Charles' eyebrows shooting upward.
]

Pardon? [ He sounds faintly appalled to be accused of banging anyone, let alone whoever this 'boss daddy' is. ] I'm not certain who you're referring to.

( Charles' assessment is right; her issue is with the speaking itself. It isn't that she doesn't have thoughts, or that she doesn't have anything to say — the first time she spoke to Logan, it was so much he flipped like a switch and told her to shut up within six seconds.

It's more that sometimes, when she's uncomfortable, the words lock up in her throat. She can't always let herself say them, not without thinking and thinking and thinking about it — when all he's privy to is the thinking, the barrier filter is eliminated.

This is one of the reasons why she liked him so much, so quickly. Communicating like this is easier, to her.

He'll sense her confusion at that last bit — civil war or political fiasco, she doesn't know these things. The concepts are a little too high level for her, especially given her rather non-traditional schooling. But what she remembers is this:

He said they were putting us places like chess. That it was his educated guess. I asked if he's an educated man where he comes from. He said he did surgery before he did magic, so I think probably he was telling the truth, except that chess looks boring and dragons aren't.

[ Goodness, another person who knows him! What future is this young man from? The one where Charles, Logan, and Laura were doing their best to survive and failing? From Erik's future? From John's future? From the future where Sentinels killed every mutant on the planet? Or another future entirely?

If there is one thing that Charles has learned from this, it's that his future has any number of possibilities.
]

I am indeed. If the pattern holds, you likely know me when I'm older and considerably more bald.

[ The joke comes easily despite the dread. He's seen his future self, he knows he looks handsome bald. But he's rather attached to his hair, actually. ]

May I ask how you know me? I've been told of a fascinating number of potential futures since I came here.

You can heal? What an incredible power.

[ Charles sounds fascinated, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. He has come across people who can heal themselves with their mutant ability, but to heal others? Goodness. A person like that would be in high demand. ]

You said your name was Faithful Caregiver, yes? You must certainly live up to your name, then. [ How ridiculously adorable. ] Were you made to be a caregiver for just one person, or for everybody?

[ That insistence on being special-- Charles can't help but wonder if the boy comes from a world where he's the only person that has powers. It's not outside of the realm of possibilities. That, or he simply has more power than most.

At the question, Charles' eyebrows wing upward. Oh dear. The boy's smile is hollow, but that he smile at all is worrying. Someone has led this child terribly astray.
]

No, I've never killed with my power.

[ His answer is gentle, concerned. Careful. He doesn't mention how easy it would be to kill with his telepathy if he tried, or if he simply lost his concentration. He doesn't mention the times that he nearly had, especially as a child with poor control. Instead, he probes cautiously, keeping his tone largely unjudgemental, just curious. ]

Bad things certainly do happen to people for a reason, but personally, I have always struggled with wondering if my reasons were good enough. What reasons have you had?

[Harry glanced at the man and gave Aya a slow smile. He lifted the hook, and tossed it to his right hand, and then back to the left. He brought the sharp tip to his lips, giving it a kiss as he winked.]

It's no' real mate. Tha's m'dad. Still got a hand underneath.

[Not for lack of trying when he was younger of course. Harry had done his best to entice one of the crocs to bite his hand off, but none had been willing. He'd gotten over it. Eventually.]
