(OOC | No problem at all!! Armand is multilingual so it seemed like a fun opportunity to play around a little with languages. I know in games where there is magic translation it doesn't make a big difference, but at least the characters might enjoy it! Also... his Maker, as a vampire, is also named Marius, any chance he might be able to pick the name out of her head using mild telepathy? Totally fine if not, but I still wanted to ask! )
Armand smiles back down at her warmly, his expression void of either judgement or acknowledgement as to her rough and clumsy street-like mannerβ because though he may cut a trim figure now in fitted, exquisitely tailored finery, this wasn't always the case.
"Ouiβ from Paris also, although naturally I was not born there." This isn't strictly necessary for him to bother pointing out, but he does so anyway, since Eponine's manner of speech evokes to him a much earlier time during which he knows faces like his were still not quite ubiquitous, if thankfully not (always) outright scorned, either, so long as one took great pains to carry themselves with sophistication and means. "I used to be a student, yes. Not for many years, though I am flattered you might mistake me again for young men of this age."
Never mind that his student years had also not even taken place in Paris; it's irrelevant, a detail which is neither here nor there.
"And what would you have liked to study, had you been a student?"
Can she even read or write, he wonders? Probably not, but such skills are not really so hard to learnβ and anyway, one's ability need not have anything to do with one's ambition, necessarily.
i'm so sorry for how late this is!! / cw vague reference to historic racism
