Test Drive Meme #3

TDM #3 - May/June 2025
🦋 Introduction

Welcome to the Pixie Led Test Drive Meme!

The prompts will always be game canon, provided both characters who participate in a thread are either already in the game, or get accepted in the next application round.

You do not need an invitation to join the Test Drive Meme, it's open for anyone!

Please indicate character name and canon in the subject line of your top-level. For current characters, you may also indicate your character's court.

For prospective players, Invites open on the 18th, Reserves on the 20th, and Applications on the 22nd. Thanks for checking us out and we hope you'll join us!

🦋 The Party

You wake up at a party.

You're not sure how, exactly, you got here. You may have just been walking in the woods or at a meeting for work or doing any other normal activity for you. But you know you weren't supposed to be at this party, you're fairly certain.

Anyone you ask about it will say the party is for you. You and the others also waking up and looking confused. Further questions will lead to the partygoers insisting you have something to eat. You're starving and others are eating the food without repercussion, so you figure there's no harm in a bite. You finish your portion.

It's another garden party near a large hedge maze in the middle of the night. With his penchant for games the Ruler of the Spring Court decided it would be nice to hold an actual game for all the Adopted present. None of that dreidel game a couple of parties ago. This time, he wants more spectacle with higher stakes. Forced to participate and host aspects of this gathering as well, the Ruler of the Dark Court wanted nothing to do with this, so he figured his participation in itself is for the party to happen at night, during his rule, when his mood is at its most pleasant.

Of course, there is no shortage of light sources such as candles and torches, much to the Earl's chagrin, as well as no shortage of food. This time, the fae decided to try their hand on some pasta. They heard it's a good delicacy from the mortal plane. Thing is, sauces look and smell bizarre. One's purple, while another's bright pink, and they taste fruity, as well as flowery, much like the cookies from the last gathering.

As the party winds down and everyone's eaten, a tall, stately woman stands up and speaks. You feel her voice more than hear it.

I am the Lawspeaker of the Fae, elected by Seelie and Unseelie alike, and you are all, now, subjects of Faerie. You cannot leave this realm once you have eaten our food, and even if you could, there is no saying how much time has passed back where you're from. Your loved ones are likely dead, your problems have likely played out. We require assistance in various matters, and each of you has been chosen for your talent and skill. You will be adopted by one of the Seelie or Unseelie Courts based on your strengths and personality. Your Court will decide what to do with you from there.

As suddenly as she stood, she sits back down.

🦋 Feeling on Hedge

So, what about this hedge maze that seems to have appeared out of nowhere and looming quite eerily beside this night's gathering? For one, peculiar noises can be heard whenever one's near its entrance. From the rustling of leaves to a woman crying, everything seems to be coming from inside.

Of course, the Adopted's participation is required and paramount. Anyone who refuses will be met with harsh penalties and consequences, whatever those may be. They also hint of a prize to anyone who comes out victorious on the other side. It's unclear what it is, though.

The fae know that while the Adopted have been very useful so far, they are also vulnerable and susceptible to fear, so to mitigate that, they have some colorful shots on a table marked LIQUID COURAGE near the entrance to the maze with such effects:

  • Gold: Essentially a strong drink that gives you profound energy for 24 hours.
  • Red: Downing this will make you feel warm like an aphrodisiac.
  • Blue: Basically functions like a normal tequila shot. Or three. Comes with a little bag of salt.

These shots are not compulsory for the Adopted to take, but they will be highly encouraged to do so before entering. Once inside, the rustling of leaves and the sounds of someone crying become louder and even more evident. There are also a few key things that seem to be very clear the longer an Adopted is within the maze's walls:

  • The maze is moving. How it's doing it, nobody knows. But it appears to be alive somehow, much like the castle grounds, so finding a clear pathway is almost impossible.
  • Whenever an Adopted turns right two consecutive times, they will see a more positive outcome from a terrible event in their lives. Lost someone? They're now here and alive. Gave up on a dream? You find yourself currently living it.
  • If an Adopted turns left two consecutive times, they will see someone, a family member or a friend who's still alive and had a deep impact on their lives, bleeding and dead on the ground.

It would be great if no one else can see an Adopted during their most vulnerable, but since the maze moves constantly, another Adopted or two might be able to see them trying to parse out what they're seeing, even if their fellow Adopted can't see it themselves.

🦋 Can't Unseelie It

CW: dismemberment, body horror, forced body transformations, mild gore, asphyxiation, drowning of children, death

The Spring King only wanted some good-natured fun within the maze, but unbeknownst to him, some Unseelie creatures and Unseelie magic have appeared inside, threatening the safety of the Adopted traversing every nook and cranny. Surely this will not have any lasting consequences between the relationship of the Seelie and Unseelie court rulers. Not at all.

A few of these Unseelie beings and Unseelie magic roaming around the hedge maze that the Adopted will have a chance to meet are as follows:

  • Manananggal: Capable of severing its torso from its legs, this vampiric creature usually preys on sleeping pregnant women and unborn babies. But not anymore. Due to magic put on it, this manananggal will strike anyone it comes across. Better pour salt on its severed lower torso once you find it, or else.
  • La Llorona: Remember that woman crying? Well, somewhere in the maze alongside the eerie sounds of water flowing, you'll come across a weeping woman cloaked in white with her back turned against you. Be careful not to approach her because once you do, she'll try to choke you to death, reminiscent of how she drowned her own children.
  • Jersey Devil: The first thing you'll hear once you turn is a high-pitched, blood-curdling scream then the sound of bat wings flapping. You better run as fast as you can to the other direction because this devil is out to attack anyone it sees on its path.
  • A fountain: How odd. Running from the jersey devil or the manananggal might have made you thirsty so perhaps there's no harm in drinking from it. But just coming in contact with its water will make any Adopted soon realize they have transformed into an Unseelie creature.

Fighting off these creatures might be best with a fellow Adopted. After all, there's power in numbers. Just be careful not to die within the hedge maze. There might be some dire consequences.

🦋 GEIS

You feel a vibration in your pocket sometime after the Lawspeaker addresses everyone. When you search for the source, you will pull out your Leaf, the device the Fae use to stay in touch with each other. Anyone who's used a smart phone will easily recognize how it works.

Greetings, Adopted. This is your Lawspeaker.

To be on theme with our festivities for tonight, we want to know a time in your life when you felt lost and wandering about. Perhaps the most compelling story will receive a reward from us.

"Think of it as your introduction to how this place works." Spike responded with a nod, not pointing out the 'don't say thank you' bit of the rules. "I see you in the pub and I'm not on shift, you owe me a good pint at least."

I've no doubt of that. [Akechi is a stubborn one, that much is certain. Caduceus would find it hard to believe he'd fall for the same trick twice.] If you'll allow me, though, I'd like to give you a little helping hand.

[He holds fast to the other's hand with one of his own, keeping him grounded, but with his free hand he reaches into his side pouch, digging through briefly before emerging with grey dust on his fingertips. He murmurs to himself, smearing the dust over Akechi's forehead, and as it lights up and dissolves, the spell sinks in: Akechi should temporarily have Truesight. No illusion should fool him again. Even the realistic-looking corpse at his feet should be nothing more than a faded backdrop over reality. Hopefully it will make this moment less agonizing to endure, not just seeing it isn't real, but seeing exactly how fake it is.

Caduceus smiles gently as he lowers his hand. It's a hefty spell, but considering the situation, it's worth it.]

I found some mushrooms.

"Whether they do or not, if they share the same use, intercepting one could give us useful information." Alicent had no fantasies of discovering a way to break herself free of this place so easily but she was well versed in adaptability and cunning, which brought her back to her interest in the ravens, or whatever beasts these fae might have preferred to carry their messages. "How much do you know about this realm?"

At a disadvantage, Alicent intended to pose the question to as many as she could in the hopes of better understanding their captors and their designs for her now that she was here.

[Gabriel isn't about to let what clearly looks to be a non-combatant get steamrolled. The whole place is teaming with weirdos beyond his immediate identification and it's just become easier to paint everything with the same big fat brush. If they're being chased, they probably don't deserve it.

The angel grumbles in frustration.
]

Cowardly beast... [That comment seemed specifically hurled out at where ever the Devil had flapped off to. Get back over here and die like a man.]

Are you uninjured?

[Oh, he's still looking for wherever the creature flapped off to, but now he's got other concerns to juggle with it.]

I've always thought it to be the best option.

Sustainable farming, maintaining and improving the dome that protected our city, and the Lumina Converter, but I don't think there's enough Chroma here for it to be that useful. I have a background in engineering, so I'd hope to be able to do something here to help. What is it you're looking for?

If that's what they wanted, you'd think they'd offer an actual prize and not a vague promise of one.

Has that been your experience with them?

"How do we get Oriental fae here? Or is that part of pulling people from everywhere, they pull the fae in too, or they can just appear everywhere? I don't bloody know- it's exhausting is what it is!" She sighs, pushing her flyaways back with her free hand.

"Hilarious? I thought it were terrifying!"

[ If this was a less dangerous scene, Lena might have asked if Sophia planned to 'walk the dog' them to death (cause of the yoyos.)

And Lena is highly tempted to just let Sophia take it. Use her a shield and then run in the opposite direction. Leave her to it, if she wants to defend humanity so much.

And yet. ]

Get lost, creep!

"Maybe it's only in other worlds it'd be considered foreign. And again, where I'm from, it's a demon. Not a fae." But Spike kept them walking, arm still around her and keeping his senses alert. "I've seen worse by spades, Nancy. Fought quite a lot of 'em too. Fyarl, Bechtens, Trolls...you do not want to know what a chaos demon looks like. All antlers and slime."

"It's," and Gustave paused to make a drawn out sound, gesturing with his hands. "I think it depends on the type of party." Chuckling, he dragged a hand through his hair. "A final voyage, I think usually, you don't really serve yourself at those." They never used to, but they hadn't had the people to spare anymore, not when there were so few of them left. There were even fewer of them now, and Gustave felt that cold realization wrap around his heart and squeeze, pushing all the air out of his chest.

"I can't complain too much. The food was better." Gustave was amused in spite of his reservations, his gaze softening as he focused on the young man, too easily falling into that guardian-like role he took on back in Lumière.

Gustave wouldn't have wanted her to put herself in danger, not for him, and he doesn't need or want an apology, so he's glad he doesn't have to awkwardly dodge that conversation and they can focus on this maze.

"We could flip a coin for it. Heads is left, tails is right? Leave it completely to chance." Gustave had a theory that if they didn't choose at all, the maze had no power over them, but there was only one way to test that.

Whatever this is.

[She echoes, heart somehow full and breaking into pieces at the same time. Nothing matters. Not their grim lives, their hopes, their failures, their losses.

She did what she said. Everything except saving the people he loved--

But she has him back.

Selfishly, that feels worth it. She can be happy with him, here.]

Just... [Maelle takes a deep breath. One more promise. One she won't doubt, even if he didn't keep the one before. Her face is smeared with tears, pale blue eyes glassy as she meets Gustave's.]

Just promise not to leave me again. Okay?

"I will simply return you to the middle of the maze."

Whatever this entails, whether Ahri will bring him where there are more of the creatures present, remains to be seen. But he's a man of his word, so without any perceivable expression on his face, he lifts one limb covered in shadows and cloaked in darkness, as if he's ready to snap this mortal back to the labyrinth where he came from.

"I am sure you will have worse." He glances towards the other's injury, not that it's discernible given how his eyes are literal black holes. "And more."

Then, bring it up to whoever is responsible.

[ Which, in short, means it's not him so he doesn't truly care in the slightest. It's not his idea to cater the parties to the Adopted. If it were up to him, Unseelie cuisine would be front and center, no matter what that means to these mortals. He wouldn't care if they have the stomach for it or not.

Gliding beside the lavish table like a spectre in the night, Ahri doesn't even spare this Adopted a glance. ]

I am not interested in hearing any more. There are far more important matters to return to than mere... [ And this is where there's a slight inflection in his tone. One of disgust, as if what he's about to say is puny and beneath him. ] complaints about food.

"You mistake me for someone who cares what happens to your life." Unlike the others who are curious in varying degrees when it comes to these mortals they've adopted, Ahri isn't. None of them matters to him except if they're somehow useful, somehow has potential.

Tonight, something has dampened his mood, even when it's his time to rule.

"I have no interest in small talk, especially when I have far more important matters to return to." He pauses, no inflection in his voice, and no signs of a mood shift on his face either.

"I am simply here to tell you that you do not belong in this table and you must leave."

[personal profile] amberdrake 2025-05-23 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"I make no such mistake," Amberdrake returns without missing a beat. He'd asked a very simple question, framed in such a way as to keep it clear he understands there's a power imbalance, and this stranger has... answered it, yes, but partially with an attempted non-answer.

Not even a threat, per se. It's just really important to this stranger that Drake knows how much he super doesn't care. And he probably doesn't, Drake's detecting no lie in him. But that sure is a lot of words for someone in such a hurry to return to 'far more important matters'.

It says a lot, to him.

He'd been curious if the dangers of the maze were purely for their bored captor's entertainment, or if something else was also afoot. Someone petulantly lashing out about the whole affair, for one potential example? Taking it out on the captives, the easiest possible targets? Powerful people are still people, after all.

It makes him curious as to what may have caused that, if that's even the case. But he knows this wouldn't be the person to find that out from. It's a puzzle piece without context, but he'll place it on the board and see if an image forms around it over time. Such is the life of a kestra'chern.

In processing all of this, he watches the Earl for one silent moment, calm and steady. At the end, there's a nod before he rises gracefully from his borrowed seat, and tucks it back under the table where he'd found it.

"I don't need any more of your time," Amberdrake says, then.

He's going to find some hot water somewhere, make himself some willowbark tea, and find a nice, quiet corner to mull this whole situation over in.

This time she doesn't show it, but Lune is tamping down on a few feelings. Of all the reactionary thoughts, the one that wins out is simply: who uses francs anymore?

Simple, sobering truth will answer the demand.

"There isn't anything useful left to give away." Lune handled her belongings before setting out on the expedition in much the same way someone prepared for their Gommage. Like some storied leader burning the boats on going ashore in a hostile land. "I was going to die on an expedition, or succeed and come back to convince the Council to supply me for new research. I thought - someone else in Lumiére could put it to use."

She's at risk of going distant thinking about futures that would never be realized, before circling back around. "In any case, I doubt they'd have someone here if they didn't want them."
