Test Drive Meme #3

TDM #3 - May/June 2025
🦋 Introduction

Welcome to the Pixie Led Test Drive Meme!

The prompts will always be game canon, provided both characters who participate in a thread are either already in the game, or get accepted in the next application round.

You do not need an invitation to join the Test Drive Meme, it's open for anyone!

Please indicate character name and canon in the subject line of your top-level. For current characters, you may also indicate your character's court.

For prospective players, Invites open on the 18th, Reserves on the 20th, and Applications on the 22nd. Thanks for checking us out and we hope you'll join us!

🦋 The Party

You wake up at a party.

You're not sure how, exactly, you got here. You may have just been walking in the woods or at a meeting for work or doing any other normal activity for you. But you know you weren't supposed to be at this party, you're fairly certain.

Anyone you ask about it will say the party is for you. You and the others also waking up and looking confused. Further questions will lead to the partygoers insisting you have something to eat. You're starving and others are eating the food without repercussion, so you figure there's no harm in a bite. You finish your portion.

It's another garden party near a large hedge maze in the middle of the night. With his penchant for games the Ruler of the Spring Court decided it would be nice to hold an actual game for all the Adopted present. None of that dreidel game a couple of parties ago. This time, he wants more spectacle with higher stakes. Forced to participate and host aspects of this gathering as well, the Ruler of the Dark Court wanted nothing to do with this, so he figured his participation in itself is for the party to happen at night, during his rule, when his mood is at its most pleasant.

Of course, there is no shortage of light sources such as candles and torches, much to the Earl's chagrin, as well as no shortage of food. This time, the fae decided to try their hand on some pasta. They heard it's a good delicacy from the mortal plane. Thing is, sauces look and smell bizarre. One's purple, while another's bright pink, and they taste fruity, as well as flowery, much like the cookies from the last gathering.

As the party winds down and everyone's eaten, a tall, stately woman stands up and speaks. You feel her voice more than hear it.

I am the Lawspeaker of the Fae, elected by Seelie and Unseelie alike, and you are all, now, subjects of Faerie. You cannot leave this realm once you have eaten our food, and even if you could, there is no saying how much time has passed back where you're from. Your loved ones are likely dead, your problems have likely played out. We require assistance in various matters, and each of you has been chosen for your talent and skill. You will be adopted by one of the Seelie or Unseelie Courts based on your strengths and personality. Your Court will decide what to do with you from there.

As suddenly as she stood, she sits back down.

🦋 Feeling on Hedge

So, what about this hedge maze that seems to have appeared out of nowhere and looming quite eerily beside this night's gathering? For one, peculiar noises can be heard whenever one's near its entrance. From the rustling of leaves to a woman crying, everything seems to be coming from inside.

Of course, the Adopted's participation is required and paramount. Anyone who refuses will be met with harsh penalties and consequences, whatever those may be. They also hint of a prize to anyone who comes out victorious on the other side. It's unclear what it is, though.

The fae know that while the Adopted have been very useful so far, they are also vulnerable and susceptible to fear, so to mitigate that, they have some colorful shots on a table marked LIQUID COURAGE near the entrance to the maze with such effects:

  • Gold: Essentially a strong drink that gives you profound energy for 24 hours.
  • Red: Downing this will make you feel warm like an aphrodisiac.
  • Blue: Basically functions like a normal tequila shot. Or three. Comes with a little bag of salt.

These shots are not compulsory for the Adopted to take, but they will be highly encouraged to do so before entering. Once inside, the rustling of leaves and the sounds of someone crying become louder and even more evident. There are also a few key things that seem to be very clear the longer an Adopted is within the maze's walls:

  • The maze is moving. How it's doing it, nobody knows. But it appears to be alive somehow, much like the castle grounds, so finding a clear pathway is almost impossible.
  • Whenever an Adopted turns right two consecutive times, they will see a more positive outcome from a terrible event in their lives. Lost someone? They're now here and alive. Gave up on a dream? You find yourself currently living it.
  • If an Adopted turns left two consecutive times, they will see someone, a family member or a friend who's still alive and had a deep impact on their lives, bleeding and dead on the ground.

It would be great if no one else can see an Adopted during their most vulnerable, but since the maze moves constantly, another Adopted or two might be able to see them trying to parse out what they're seeing, even if their fellow Adopted can't see it themselves.

🦋 Can't Unseelie It

CW: dismemberment, body horror, forced body transformations, mild gore, asphyxiation, drowning of children, death

The Spring King only wanted some good-natured fun within the maze, but unbeknownst to him, some Unseelie creatures and Unseelie magic have appeared inside, threatening the safety of the Adopted traversing every nook and cranny. Surely this will not have any lasting consequences between the relationship of the Seelie and Unseelie court rulers. Not at all.

A few of these Unseelie beings and Unseelie magic roaming around the hedge maze that the Adopted will have a chance to meet are as follows:

  • Manananggal: Capable of severing its torso from its legs, this vampiric creature usually preys on sleeping pregnant women and unborn babies. But not anymore. Due to magic put on it, this manananggal will strike anyone it comes across. Better pour salt on its severed lower torso once you find it, or else.
  • La Llorona: Remember that woman crying? Well, somewhere in the maze alongside the eerie sounds of water flowing, you'll come across a weeping woman cloaked in white with her back turned against you. Be careful not to approach her because once you do, she'll try to choke you to death, reminiscent of how she drowned her own children.
  • Jersey Devil: The first thing you'll hear once you turn is a high-pitched, blood-curdling scream then the sound of bat wings flapping. You better run as fast as you can to the other direction because this devil is out to attack anyone it sees on its path.
  • A fountain: How odd. Running from the jersey devil or the manananggal might have made you thirsty so perhaps there's no harm in drinking from it. But just coming in contact with its water will make any Adopted soon realize they have transformed into an Unseelie creature.

Fighting off these creatures might be best with a fellow Adopted. After all, there's power in numbers. Just be careful not to die within the hedge maze. There might be some dire consequences.

🦋 GEIS

You feel a vibration in your pocket sometime after the Lawspeaker addresses everyone. When you search for the source, you will pull out your Leaf, the device the Fae use to stay in touch with each other. Anyone who's used a smart phone will easily recognize how it works.

Greetings, Adopted. This is your Lawspeaker.

To be on theme with our festivities for tonight, we want to know a time in your life when you felt lost and wandering about. Perhaps the most compelling story will receive a reward from us.

You familiar at all with the fae then? Because that's the big danger. Beyond that, we've got a good variety of types here. Your best bet honestly is to ask on the network. On your mobile device thing. It's called a Leaf.

[Spike is entirely not bothered by that, if Zero is looking for a reaction.]

Only 'protection' any of us have is that we ARE adopted. So people treat us as honorary fae. But we're more like pets, prisoners, or toys. Or all three and it changes at any given moment.

[ That's a lot of emphasis on Kiriya's faith, but that interesting thought is very abruptly derailed as their uninvited guest makes a surprise reappearance. He has to do his best to fight down the horses' instinct to bolt, dancing in place for just a moment before he can regain control. ]

It better be soon.

[ The response sounds just a touch tight, but as promised Kiriya is holding back. Extremely tense with it, but holding. Even as the unseelie dives for them. ]

Who's having a mental crisis? Not this guy!

Lucifer hummed thoughtfully as he had a seat as well, helping himself to a neat little criss-cross applesauce. He raised a hand to wave it dismissively, as if giving the tea set the go-ahead. The pot sprung to life and bounced across the blanket, pausing to fill three cups. In Lucifer's view, Charlie giggled her delight, and was helping herself to a mixed fruit tart.

Charlie may not be there in Octavia's eyes, but those were definitely crumbs manifesting on that place setting, and the tea was dwindling.

The king brought a hand to mask his mouth. "Between you and me? Me neither. Every party I go to is just to kiss my butt and build clout. It's exhausting after a while, but I look like an as-... a jerk if I tell them no."

He gestured out to their spread before he went to plate up the tarte. Wedged apples cooked in caramel nestled atop flaky pastry, and he passed the piece to the Goetia along with the fork. "The smaller, the better, I say! With no ambient chatter or yawn-inducing orchestra set up on a stage, people can actually talk to each other. Without shouting."

He does pause, though he shoots the path in front of them a thoughtful look in the meantime. He could, conceivably, do something about whatever it is that's up there, but fighting in confined spaces isn't really his strong suit. Plus he'd probably have to explain that to his new friend and that sounds like a lot of effort.

So in the end he shrugs and glances back Drake's way. "Too close to slip by if it's not paying attention?" Option two: act as a distraction.

[ A nod, understanding. ] That’s along the lines of my next question—

It this place… generally accepting of those like us? I’m not sure how it’s in your world, and fae seem to be indifferent. [ Some fae eat babies for breakfast, so. ]

[Spike studies him over his mug, assessing and not being shy about it. It's a subtle shift of posture too, alert. Loose, alert, and confident. Someone who knows how to move and is trained and experienced.]

Well, that depends. You plan to play nice?

[ It's now or never. With the creature momentarily restrained, the Librarian darts towards its lower half and lets ritualistic instinct take over. He opens his hand over the gaping wound of the half-body, dusting it with grains of Bitterblack Salts and, with a slight grimace, traces into it with a finger a sigil of the Sun-in-Rags.

He had not produced as much of the salts as he would have tinkering in his Library, but perhaps it doesn't matter. Bitterblack Salts are no mere table condiment. They are an alchemical reagent, the first rung on the ascent to Orpiment Exultant—potent even in small amounts.

Still, even the Librarian is surprised as the the grains begin to work upon the wound, the flesh hissing and giving off a bitter smoke with the mingled scent of carbon and licorice. He steps back as the rigid legs of the thing begin to kick and twitch, as if in death throes, then turns helplessly to where his new acquaintance is still struggling with the beast. He can only hope the ritual will have had a similar effect upon the creature's upper half. ]

"I don't know," the Healer says quietly, "but I don't know that it's worth the risk of trying. The paths change constantly."

Doubling back is unlikely to be a total waste, and it's not like they know which direction the exit's in.

[ The Librarian turns at the sound of the question, the scowl on his face momentarily replaced by a look of confusion—and then turning right back into a scowl as he looks upward again. ]

I've changed my mind. Theatre is too good a word; this is hardly a jape.

[ With a huff, he looks back at the young man, gesturing disdainfully at the false corpse before him. ]

I'm looking at a facsimile resembling the slaughtered corpse of an old friend—one that our hosts did not even deign to make visible to their other captives, judging by your reaction. A mediocre attempt at inflicting emotional anguish, no doubt. [ He sniffs. ] Are these self-described "fae" always so incompetently malevolent?

That certainly sounds like Steve.

[Peggy gives him a smile that's somewhere between amused and exasperated, but more on the side of amused.]

Oh, Loki mentioned you just the other day, although they seemed to be more interested in talking about Jane Foster. It's always a pleasure to meet another Captain.

[Especially one who isn't Steve - the multiverse seems to skew towards him, more often than not.]

I'm not familiar, no. Who is it who actually adopted us? Anyone in specific, or is it just a collective term?

I'll be sure to ask around about that, then.
sod_off: (Spike 35)

[personal profile] sod_off 2025-06-27 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
[That has Spike arching a brow, looking at the other curiously.]

You get adopted by one of the 8 court rulers to be part of their court. There are 4 unseelie, and 4 seelie, and I'm still not sure what the differences are other than some very obvious things. The Seelie courts are named after the seasons, and the Unseelie courts are named after the time of day or night.

[A pause.]

Also watch out for King Narciso. He's in power right now, and the spring court ruler. But he uses his Charm ability way too liberally and on anything that walks and talks to him. It's not pleasant.

[With the confident (arrogant?) ease of a man who is accustomed to being the main muscle in any mixed group of people, S'rei nods and pats the other man on the shoulder.] I understand, I'll protect you. You can even just drop me off and run again, if you prefer.

[The upper half is, thankfully, in the same agony as its legs; the monster's shrieks of pain are nearly unholy, S'rei's ears laying flat at the terrible cries, gurgles precluding the thing frothing at the mouth.

With a nearly unnatural stubbornness, S'rei remains clinging to the creature in the wrapped chokehold until its flails have ceased for a good twenty seconds. He then finally uncurls himself slowly, extracing his limbs from beneath its still body and shaking out his stiff, bloodied arms.]

...well. [That sure solved that. He's going to wrench his spear loose first, just in case the fiend wishes to return to live for round two, before heading over to check on the Librarian.]

There's been no proof to dispute or support what they say. [Aya crosses his arms, looking disappointed.] I think some are too distracted to ask people from their own worlds the right questions. It would be crazy if the fae could kidnap so many of us at once and just...

[The thought of many more of them just in stasis somewhere, like a coma, and dropped into this world a few at a time to create the illusion of time being loose, makes him blanche a bit.]

"I agree. Despite their attempts at making us complacent with offerings of food and shelter, I doubt they have the power to control the fate of the world back home."

Yusuke lets his hold on her drop as he gestures for her to follow.

"It is sad you have the practice as always, but good that you are more prepared than the rest of us."

He begins to walk down the path of the maze that Haru was coming from.

"Hopefully together we will be able to conquer this maze faster and get out."
desireandhope: (More shock)

[The horrible woman is fast, faster than Yusuke or his newfound companion are expecting, and she just manages to snap her hands around his neck and squeeze before the scythe swing forces her to let go so she doesn't lose her head. Yusuke goes crashing to the ground, wheezing at the sudden grab and then release.

The woman's sobs turn into a shriek as she turns wild, angry eyes on the intruder. Yusuke takes the chance to scoot back a bit but lets out a slight cough. La Llorna's attention snaps back to her prey and she leaps at him to try and grab at his hair to drag him back to the water.]

Unhand me!

[Yusuke strikes a leg out to try and keep her from grabbing but the woman (creature?) is relentless.]

[ The Librarian nearly sags with relief when he sees the creature’s upper half writhing in pain along with its counterpart—though he can’t help but wince, too. If only a less agonizing means of dispatch were possible.

Finally, the beast lays silent and still, and the Librarian lets out a long exhale. He stumbles away from the stinking remains, wiping sweat from his brow. ]
Well, [ he says, echoing the other man’s sentiment. ] Well. It was quite fortuitous that you showed up when you did. My genuine thanks for your help with that… thing. [ A tired, double-handed gesture at the two dead halves. ] I doubt I would have survived unassisted.

[ Now that he has a chance to actually look at the man, he notices how unusual his appearance is. His face is marked with jagged tattoos and what the Librarian had initially taken for protrusions of hair, he now realizes are a pair of feliform ears. More importantly, though: he’s bleeding. The Librarian steps forward, concerned. ]

Are you alright? It looks as if that thing got its proboscis into your arms quite a few times. Not feeling woozy, are you?

Yes. But not many do it. We were made to be soldiers of God, not have free will.

Remind yourself. [ His eyes flick toward her, head tipped. ] And if you forget, I’ll remind you.

Ah, this? I'm more concerned for the state of my sleeves. [No idea if he's going to be able to mend them. He liked this outfit, too...

Still, it's easy to miss cat ears and a tail when fighting desperately for one's life. For his part at least, S'rei doesn't seem surprised by the Librarian's appearance so much as his skill. He comes closer, maybe a little more than would be considered polite, and peers at both the lower half of the creature and then at the wound still on the Librarian's face.]
How did you cast those spells without a focus tool? No book, no staff?

[Because ngl if there's a trick to that he can learn, it's over for these maze hoes. Even as he speaks, S'rei reaches up to try and touch careful fingertips to the Librarian's cheek, only able to muster the weakest Esuna to fend off any potential infection.]

Not everyone does what they 'should'. Nor is everyone's definition of nice the same. No making new vamps, no making servants or ghouls, no murdering where you live. You need to eat, you do it discreetly and clean up after yourself. No bringing attention unduly on the rest of us.
