Test Drive Meme #3

TDM #3 - May/June 2025
🦋 Introduction

Welcome to the Pixie Led Test Drive Meme!

The prompts will always be game canon, provided both characters who participate in a thread are either already in the game, or get accepted in the next application round.

You do not need an invitation to join the Test Drive Meme, it's open for anyone!

Please indicate character name and canon in the subject line of your top-level. For current characters, you may also indicate your character's court.

For prospective players, Invites open on the 18th, Reserves on the 20th, and Applications on the 22nd. Thanks for checking us out and we hope you'll join us!

🦋 The Party

You wake up at a party.

You're not sure how, exactly, you got here. You may have just been walking in the woods or at a meeting for work or doing any other normal activity for you. But you know you weren't supposed to be at this party, you're fairly certain.

Anyone you ask about it will say the party is for you. You and the others also waking up and looking confused. Further questions will lead to the partygoers insisting you have something to eat. You're starving and others are eating the food without repercussion, so you figure there's no harm in a bite. You finish your portion.

It's another garden party near a large hedge maze in the middle of the night. With his penchant for games the Ruler of the Spring Court decided it would be nice to hold an actual game for all the Adopted present. None of that dreidel game a couple of parties ago. This time, he wants more spectacle with higher stakes. Forced to participate and host aspects of this gathering as well, the Ruler of the Dark Court wanted nothing to do with this, so he figured his participation in itself is for the party to happen at night, during his rule, when his mood is at its most pleasant.

Of course, there is no shortage of light sources such as candles and torches, much to the Earl's chagrin, as well as no shortage of food. This time, the fae decided to try their hand on some pasta. They heard it's a good delicacy from the mortal plane. Thing is, sauces look and smell bizarre. One's purple, while another's bright pink, and they taste fruity, as well as flowery, much like the cookies from the last gathering.

As the party winds down and everyone's eaten, a tall, stately woman stands up and speaks. You feel her voice more than hear it.

I am the Lawspeaker of the Fae, elected by Seelie and Unseelie alike, and you are all, now, subjects of Faerie. You cannot leave this realm once you have eaten our food, and even if you could, there is no saying how much time has passed back where you're from. Your loved ones are likely dead, your problems have likely played out. We require assistance in various matters, and each of you has been chosen for your talent and skill. You will be adopted by one of the Seelie or Unseelie Courts based on your strengths and personality. Your Court will decide what to do with you from there.

As suddenly as she stood, she sits back down.

🦋 Feeling on Hedge

So, what about this hedge maze that seems to have appeared out of nowhere and looming quite eerily beside this night's gathering? For one, peculiar noises can be heard whenever one's near its entrance. From the rustling of leaves to a woman crying, everything seems to be coming from inside.

Of course, the Adopted's participation is required and paramount. Anyone who refuses will be met with harsh penalties and consequences, whatever those may be. They also hint of a prize to anyone who comes out victorious on the other side. It's unclear what it is, though.

The fae know that while the Adopted have been very useful so far, they are also vulnerable and susceptible to fear, so to mitigate that, they have some colorful shots on a table marked LIQUID COURAGE near the entrance to the maze with such effects:

  • Gold: Essentially a strong drink that gives you profound energy for 24 hours.
  • Red: Downing this will make you feel warm like an aphrodisiac.
  • Blue: Basically functions like a normal tequila shot. Or three. Comes with a little bag of salt.

These shots are not compulsory for the Adopted to take, but they will be highly encouraged to do so before entering. Once inside, the rustling of leaves and the sounds of someone crying become louder and even more evident. There are also a few key things that seem to be very clear the longer an Adopted is within the maze's walls:

  • The maze is moving. How it's doing it, nobody knows. But it appears to be alive somehow, much like the castle grounds, so finding a clear pathway is almost impossible.
  • Whenever an Adopted turns right two consecutive times, they will see a more positive outcome from a terrible event in their lives. Lost someone? They're now here and alive. Gave up on a dream? You find yourself currently living it.
  • If an Adopted turns left two consecutive times, they will see someone, a family member or a friend who's still alive and had a deep impact on their lives, bleeding and dead on the ground.

It would be great if no one else can see an Adopted during their most vulnerable, but since the maze moves constantly, another Adopted or two might be able to see them trying to parse out what they're seeing, even if their fellow Adopted can't see it themselves.

🦋 Can't Unseelie It

CW: dismemberment, body horror, forced body transformations, mild gore, asphyxiation, drowning of children, death

The Spring King only wanted some good-natured fun within the maze, but unbeknownst to him, some Unseelie creatures and Unseelie magic have appeared inside, threatening the safety of the Adopted traversing every nook and cranny. Surely this will not have any lasting consequences between the relationship of the Seelie and Unseelie court rulers. Not at all.

A few of these Unseelie beings and Unseelie magic roaming around the hedge maze that the Adopted will have a chance to meet are as follows:

  • Manananggal: Capable of severing its torso from its legs, this vampiric creature usually preys on sleeping pregnant women and unborn babies. But not anymore. Due to magic put on it, this manananggal will strike anyone it comes across. Better pour salt on its severed lower torso once you find it, or else.
  • La Llorona: Remember that woman crying? Well, somewhere in the maze alongside the eerie sounds of water flowing, you'll come across a weeping woman cloaked in white with her back turned against you. Be careful not to approach her because once you do, she'll try to choke you to death, reminiscent of how she drowned her own children.
  • Jersey Devil: The first thing you'll hear once you turn is a high-pitched, blood-curdling scream then the sound of bat wings flapping. You better run as fast as you can to the other direction because this devil is out to attack anyone it sees on its path.
  • A fountain: How odd. Running from the jersey devil or the manananggal might have made you thirsty so perhaps there's no harm in drinking from it. But just coming in contact with its water will make any Adopted soon realize they have transformed into an Unseelie creature.

Fighting off these creatures might be best with a fellow Adopted. After all, there's power in numbers. Just be careful not to die within the hedge maze. There might be some dire consequences.

🦋 GEIS

You feel a vibration in your pocket sometime after the Lawspeaker addresses everyone. When you search for the source, you will pull out your Leaf, the device the Fae use to stay in touch with each other. Anyone who's used a smart phone will easily recognize how it works.

Greetings, Adopted. This is your Lawspeaker.

To be on theme with our festivities for tonight, we want to know a time in your life when you felt lost and wandering about. Perhaps the most compelling story will receive a reward from us.

If she had just a little bit less self-control than she does, Kel would have cursed. Instead there's just a quick, sharp little sigh. "Of course. What a dirty trick--I'm sorry."

It's ridiculous. In any other scenario, this would be such an easy problem to address. Her duty, unquestionably, is to see that this man receives the aid he needs, but she can't do that here without further endangering him. "... You wanted to know if the food here was poisoned, right? I haven't tried anything they've put out at this particular party, but nothing I've eaten here has made me ill yet. They say they want to use us, so it's in their interest to keep us alive and in good health, so I don't believe they would intentionally feed us anything truly dangerous. Does that help your decision any?"

[It would be convenient. There's a bare flicker of disappointment in Lune's expression, not just for the lack of gestrals, but for one specific brushhead.

Keep going. Slowly, Lune gives a single nod.]

It's worth keeping an eye out for opportunities. But we certainly can't make our own way back without first understanding this realm.

I'm good for any spoilers!

She does think he's withholding, but honestly, when hasn't she seen Renoir speak in terms that seemed cryptic to her simply because she lacked context? Lune rises, thinking she's carefully extricating herself from fallen bodies, to stand before the man.

"Helping the fae courts? That must be a new experience for you."

There's a barb in her tone. Lune's perception of Renoir is colored by her experience and by Verso's explanation of him. It seems to her that he is motivated by a sort of selfishness. Keeping the immortality Verso mentioned, and something about his family. What a contrast with Lune and her parents, dedicated to their work for everyone.

"The kingdom you were working for wasn't your home?"

Is she picturing it correctly? Lune is imagining it, a world where people weren't huddled into a singular place to live. People had tried to make a life elsewhere in her world, sure, but they never succeeded. The dome was a safe place to wait out your life. The continent was a beautiful and dangerous place to find a different end.

Her fingers are absently curling in the air as she reflects.

"I'm sure you would have found yourself working on something else if you had stayed," she murmurs.

She can't give what she doesn't have, so Lune simply regards her, standing firm. Maybe she could offer something intangible, but that would be a sour attempt at comfort for someone with physical needs. Besides. If she promises acts, they are all things Lune would do anyway. Offer to heal Eponine if she ever needs? If there's a chance, doing that is just being human, she thinks.

She softens a little when those more vulnerable words come.

"People make mistakes, but they are very deliberate when they are making a great effort. Less likely to commit an error then." Lune tips her head at the feast. "This looks like a lot of effort to me."

For what comfort that might be.

Of course I shall. We're just espousing caution, here, aren't we? You can hold on, if you like. No affronts to my person, remember?

[Well, so long as Koh minds his earrings, but by now, Wrathion is certain that she will. He's confident, he sounds as if all this is perfectly reasonable, despite the situation. He's not sure anything like this would happen on Azeroth, if he's being honest. His grip tightens and he takes a few steps forward, moving closer to the hedge. Practically brushing up against it.

Which seems to anger it, and a vine from within the maze lashes out in an attempt to coil around Wrathion's waist (and, perhaps, Koh's ankles, as well). The dragon isn't about to let that happen. He grips the drow's legs a bit tighter, and moves quickly out of the way, back into an open space (likely out of where Koh can get any good glimpses of how the maze is mapped. Alas.) The hedge, somewhat mollified, settles back down immediately, though it still shifts about within. Audibly.]

Well! I wasn't expecting that! I guess we're supposed to find our way out on our own, and upon our own two feet!

[He's not entirely calm anymore; Wrathion's voice has gone a bit higher pitched in agitation. Though for the moment, there's another thing to consider.]

Are you all right, Koh?

it's all good!

[The projected memory of a burning face doesn't weigh on Lune the way it seemed to for Maelle. Just sweep that moment into a dark corner of the mind and don't bring it back into the light. Fire is dangerous, but it's still a tool for Lune.

Looking to the hedge will make it that much easier for Verso to hide his smirk. Lune crosses her arms, thinks. Maybe it'd be more viable if the plants were dead and dry. As it is, they'd be shrouded in thick smoke and she'd have to keep propagating the heat. And that's assuming no special interference...Lune shakes her head.]

We'll keep that in reserve. [A ghost of a smile, and she adds:] You'll live if we have to walk a little further, anyway.

"Oh? So these fae are essentially skewering anyone they can? Proverbially or not?" That doesn't much endear them to him, when it comes down to it. Wrathion had always styled himself as a protector--even if he's been a bit more ruthless and pragmatic than some of the other proclaimed defenders of Azeroth.

He hadn't planned to step into the role here, but when it falls into his lap, well. He's not about to shy away from it, either.

Though the answer to his question gives the dragon pause. His gaze is probably fixed on Nahobino's retreating back, but...Wrathion has to ask, even as he quickens his pace to follow.

"What would you call yourself, then? I'm not everyone." Perhaps that last is laced in his usual casual arrogance, but the question itself is honest, candid. Aspects knew he'd been referred to in the past by words that chafed at best.

[ He's not going to force her, either way. There is still a small chance that this is real, and in that case he will absolutely understand if she wants to go back for this man's body, but he doesn't think that will happen. After what he's seen in this maze so far, he's certain this is only another illusion.

So he isn't surprised when the body fades as soon as she gets to her feet. As if the moment she decided to let go, it ceased to exist. Erik takes a deep breath, trying not to think back to the image on Nina fading away. Then he looks to her. ]

They play these tricks on us sometimes. I don't know if there's a purpose to it, or if it's just their concept of entertainment. They don't... think the way we do.

[ Which isn't to say any of this is either right or wrong, just that they can't really judge based on their own sense of morality. The Fae are bound to different rules, different notions. ]

We should keep going. [ He can imagine this must have been a lot for her, but it's not safe here, and even less so if they stay in one place too long. ]

That is a given. Knowledge is power. Perhaps the only power we may be allowed, here.

Though I dare say this world makes no sense to us. I'm sure it makes sense to our captors.

You?

What Arman says brings only more questions. Without more context, he's a bit confused, but this is no place for an interrogation, Wrathion knows. So he'll save it until they're in a place that is safer than this maze.

"You may do whatever you feel is needed. Should anything challenge us, I will protect you both." Even if he couldn't see this Mira, he could understand. Aspects knew that if his own vision had involved Anduin, and not Ebyssian, he'd be more of a wreck, and his emotions had run high enough when it had only been a vision of his brother!

"I do not know if it is the rulers of the land for certain. It could only be a trick of the land itself. I can usually sense magic, but...it is so much a part of everything, here, it's all run together. I wish I could give you a better answer, my friend."

The last comment is a bit off the cuff, and normally, it would just be the smooth words of the Black Dragonflight's diplomat, but...given time, Wrathion feels as if that could be the truth.

[In the brief moment before Wrathion walked fully up against the bushes, the drow's pale keen eyes did manage to get a glimpse over the hedge. Those white eyes of hers were well suited for the dark, seeing it as well as anyone in the sunlit hours. It had been 15 years since Koh adjusted to life on the Surface so the sun didn't bother her as much. Though when the sun was at its peak, it did mildly irritate her sensitive eyes.

Unfortunately, what she saw didn't provide much help. A vast sea of green in all directions. Barely, she could make out rustling leaves of something moving. Perhaps the very bushes themselves. Shit, that's right... She had a suspicion that the maze was shifting. Even if she spotted the way out, it might be-
]

Ah!

[A sharp yelp cuts the air as Koh felt something brush against her lower leg. Peeling her eyes away to glance down, she saw the twist of a branch reaching for them. Koh barely had time to react before Wrathion had it in hand, pull both of them back to safety. Slumping over, she pressed her cheek into his hair with a long relieved sigh.]

I'm unharmed. If you told me this morning that I would be assulted by sentient bushes, I would have called you mad. [Another long sigh, this one more defeated.] It was no good... All I saw was green. If the maze keeps moving, I don't think it would matter even if I did see the exit.

[Right before she asked to be let down, a sound caught her ears. Sitting straight back up at full attention, her head snapped around. From where they stood, she couldn't see far, but it was far enough to see the tops of the bushes tremble violently as something big was heading their way. Stuck on his shoulder, Koh frantically tapped the crown of his head.]

Oh, Gods. Put me down! We gotta go, we gotta go!

"Adaptation is definitely gonna help you here," Diana said, immediately pouncing on the bright side when she saw it. "There are plenty of surprises. I mean, the Fae literally have a logic we still haven't figured out."

She was still slightly soured by the vendor in the marketplace who tried to sell her a guitar for the price of 'the color of her eyes.'

Diana liked her lavender eyes very much. Despite the trouble they sometimes brought her.

"And besides the Fae," she continued, "the multiverse brings its own challenges to everyone's expectations."
undertheweight: (I will see you burn!)

[personal profile] undertheweight 2025-05-25 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
If you'd told me this morning that I would be, I'd have scoffed as well--we have ambulatory plants where I'm from, but most lashers just...exist. Sometimes they get riled up, though. These plants are nothing like that, I assure you! Don't get upset, you did your best--

[And then she's smacking the top of his head. Well. As startling as it was, he can hear the rustling of the bushes, too. And that cannot be good. His earrings can go to the Twisting Nether, now, for all Wrathion cares. He reaches swiftly above his head, grabbing the unsuspecting drow around her waist, and just hauls her bodily over his head. He doesn't even pause to ascertain her stability before he's got an arm around her waist, practically herding her towards one of the maze exits. He's pulling his saber with the other.]

No wasting time, then! Let's go!

[Koh can take care of herself, and even heal, so she's a force to be reckoned with in her own right. But between the two of them, Wrathion is certain he can take more damage. So of course, he's putting himself between the drow and--whatever that is that is coming for them.]

[personal profile] maellum 2025-05-25 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[There's a lot of reasons why she shouldn't trust Verso. The vital things were forced to light, against his will, and even then there's still so much more Maelle doesn't fully understand. Yet he's been kind to her, and maybe that's all it takes, now. When Maelle looks into his eyes she wants to trust him. Especially now, when her feelings are raw and her eyes are tired from tears. Happy tears, for once. For the most part.]

You can get him into trouble for fun as long as you both can get out of it.

[She says with a sniffle and a smile.]

[Again, there was that little shocked yelp as her companion took her by the waist and picked her up like she weighted nothing. That was strange, right? But there was not time to think about that when something big, and from the sound of it, angry was heading their way. The moment her feet touched the ground, the drow took off running, with Wrathion's hand on her waist guiding her out.

No, wait, that was a good idea. Without explanation, she reached back to take his hand in hers. What if one of them ran too far away from one another and the bushes separates them? They would not be left alone. She hoped that he understood the meaning behind her gesture as they fled down the straightaway. Stealing just a quick glance over her shoulder, the drow had instant regret.

Appearing from the other side from where they were was one of the most bizarre creatures she has ever seen. Head of a horse but the wings and legs of a fiend. It's beady locked on them as it snarled. But as they turned the corner, her view was cut short.

[Wrathion was moving, but Koh's shock has him turning to look. Crimson eyes widened--he'd never seen anything of its like before, but Wrathion shakes his head.]

I've no idea. Nothing good! Keep going!

[With her, he's trying to be as gentle as he can, but he does shoulder her along. At least until there's another maze opening--another clearing. Damn. Who knows if they're anywhere closer to the end. Not him, and he's already tired of this thing chasing them. She probably tugs him as he stops short, turning to raise his sword and hold it at the ready.]

I am not going to let this thing keep chasing us! Aspects only know where it's trying to herd us!

Well, if that doesn't sound comforting... [Maelle sighs, hands resting on her hips. All of this is varying degrees of alarming, but not quite near any of the worst she's seen as of late, so it's just a little but of muted horror.]

You tried to kill her, she liked it a lot, apparently, and... made a deal with you? And this is all typical, here.

"Alright," Henry nods, voice raised slightly before going quiet, sitting cross-legged in the grass, keeping an ear and eye out for any other threats.

He waits a few minutes before letting out a slow but very unneeded breath, to center himself a little, thinking about what he saw in the maze before he came across the man being attacked.

Wondering what it would be like if it had been real, "How are you feeling?" he asks, after a few minutes, "Is there anything I can do?"

Renoir slightly tilts his head. Her sharp and pointed words deflect off his ego. Outside of her connection to that girl who doesn't belong, he has little fascination for her as a person, as she is irrelevent to his family.

"There are people for whom we are willing to do anything."

Including endure another world.

Still, he has never been shy about his motives. But far as he knows, this woman has never been around to hear them.
